Retrospec Bicycles founder, Ely Alexander, made a decision to buy his first fixed-gear bicycle as a junior in college. Looking back, he would tell you that building his own fixed-gear bike changed his life. At first Alexander rode his bike to class and around campus, but eventually he joined night riding crews and became friendly with the local bike shops. He didn’t stop there.
The University of Southern California student opened up shop in the heart of Downtown LA and began manufacturing fixies, or in his own words, “a trendy and self expressive product that promotes healthy activity and alternative transportation.” If you aren’t familiar with what a fixed-gear bicycle is, attempt to recall the messenger bicycle of the 1950s. The Retrospec bicycle is the modern take on this new-school bicycle technology meets old-school classic design elements. In their three years in business, this bicycle company has made a big splash with media headlines such as “Retrospec Bikes Take Over LA” and “Ride it Like Beckham” – that’s right David Beckham has one. It’s impossible to complete my drive from home (Sherman Oaks) to work (Downtown LA) without letting a college student, hipster, young professional, or hot mom on one of these bicycles catch my eye. This is partly because they are everywhere, and partly because they are impossible to miss with their vibrant colors!
Retrospec has 12 grip colors , 10 crank colors and 10 wheel colors (pictures below).
