How To: Fishtail Braid

Braids seem to be everywhere these days- but lately, fishtail braids seem to be the new thing. They offer a snazzy twist on a traditional braid and can be dressed up or dressed down; wear one to the beach, pool, work, or for a night out. Celebrities like Nicole Richie, Rachel Zoe and Leona Lewis have been sporting this trend, and us regular gals are liking what we see. These braids are perfect for those who are too busy to shampoo/condition/blow out our luscious locks but still want something that’s trendy and fun. Take it from someone who literally cannot do her own hair- they look complicated, but if you follow the directions below and/or watch the Youtube video attached, you will see how effortless a fishtail braid is to execute. Just remember: If your hair is too short, a fishtail braid is pretty much impossible (hey, there are always extensions!).

Okay, lets do this:
• First, divide the hair you want to braid into two equal sections.
• Start a fishtail braid by holding the right section with your right hand. Then, using your left hand, pick up a one-eighth-inch chunk of hair from the outside of the left section and cross it over to the inside of the right section.
• Repeat on the other side: Hold the left section in your left hand. Use your right hand to pick up a one-eighth-inch chunk of hair from the outer right section and cross it over to the inside of the left section.
• Continue picking up small sections and crossing them over until you reach the ends of your hair.
• Secure with an elastic.

If you love the bohemian look, add some flowers into the braid (daisies look super chic and are the perfect size). If you’re into the beachy look, loosen the braid so pieces fall out and give it a look that doesn’t seem so “done”- best way to do this is to spritz hair with a dry shampoo before you start the braid; this adds that desirable texture. If you’re going to an event or to work, keep the braid tight and use a smoothing creme (not serum). When twisting it together, this will ensure that your braid stays smooth and sleek.
Good Luck and Happy Braiding!
