Full and Healthy Hair- The RIGHT Way!
As teens, we’re told that the better we protect and take care of our skin, the better off we will be in our later years. I for one, know how true this is.. my grandmother is in her late eighties and her skin still looks UNBELIEVABLE! I would hope to think it is because of good family genes, but after speaking with my grandmother about it, I know it’s because she has always taken care of her skin. As if our skin wasn’t enough to worry about, I have recently been informed that we need to care for our scalps the same way! Christyn Nawrot, national educator for haircare brand, Phyto explains, “As hair ages, we produce less keratin — the protein that renders it strong and healthy — because our bodies can’t absorb essential minerals and vitamins as effectively.”
Forget the hair extension route, keep your hair full and healthy looking the right way! Here are some tips to maintain your hair health the right way!
Lay off the Heat..
The biggest mistake that women make is too much heat styling! The insanely powerful tools that women use at home zap moisture from the hair. Moisture is important because it allows minerals to develop and helps keep free radicals away! Besides using an amazing deep conditioner once or twice a week, try products that mimic hair’s missing keratin; this will fill in the spots that age and environment have tarnished.
Stay Stress Free…
Stress causes breakouts on your skin, and it also causes hair to be problematic. Nawrot explains, “Each piece of hair has its own circulatory system, a sweat gland, a sebaceous gland — its own little world. With stress, each follicle becomes tight and rigid.” Stress speeds up adrenaline production, basically causing extra hair to fall out. How to deal? Try yoga, prescription anti-androgen treatments, and make sure your birth control pill is low-androgen as well!
Nutrition, Nutrition, Nutrition…
Hair is a nonessential tissue- this means that it’s the last to have access to any ingested nutrients. Hair is at the bottom of the nutrition list, so watch what you eat and how much you eat. Center your diet around protein, iron, zinc, and foods with lots of antioxidants like berries and greens. Eating well regularly will have positive effects on hair. Also, try supplements like Vitamin K and cysteine to help produce keratin and melanin. Iron, zinc, biotin and silica supplements will also combat thinning hair!
Use Products that Care…
Treat your scalp the same way you would treat your face! The condition of your scalp will impact your hair! Try a hair product that works on the scalp as well as your locks. Products with argon oil, bur oil, grape seed extract, and Vitamins C and E treat the scalp just like the rest of your precious skin!
Find Ways To “Bulk It Up”…
First off, many products out there have fillers, helping fill the hair strand with flexible soft fibers, helping to increase density of the hair shaft (sort of like restalyne or juviderm!). In addition, like BANGSTYLE has reported before, talk to your colorist, as color helps bulk up the shaft! Soft color around the face will give you dimension, but not make your hair look stripy. A side swept bang and layers will also give the appearance of thicker hair.
Get the Help You Need…
If your drains are getting clogged from your massive amount of hair loss, consult a doctor. Unlike male balding, women’s hair loss happens all over, making it very hard to detect. There are many ways to treat hair loss, you just need to find out which way is best for you!
