Chaz Bono Breaks Off Engagement With Longtime Love
He captured the hearts of millions during his stint on Dancing With The Stars, and now Chaz Bono is back in the headlines, this time with a bit of sad news. Less than a month after Chaz Bono bestowed a dazzling engagement ring upon his longtime lover, Jennifer Elia, the two are calling it quits for good, his rep confirmed to TMZ.
“They leave this relationship with great love, respect and affection toward one another. No further amplification will be forthcoming and they ask that you respect their privacy at this time,” Bono’s rep, Howard Bragman told TMZ.
Chaz Bono put on a brave face and addressed the separation on Twitter. ”Thanks for your concern about our separation,” he tweeted on Monday afternoon. “I’m doing fine, and we remain on good terms with nothing but respect and affection 4 each other.”
While the two had only recently become publicly engaged, they have a long history together. Bono and Elia began dating back in 2005, and the pair had actually been engaged for quite some time now; they wanted to wait until Chaz had made a full transition from female to male before tying the knot.
“We’ve been engaged actually for two years,” Chaz told Piers Morgan in May. “We’re big supporters of marriage equality, and that’s kind of weird now to be able to do that.”
The couple’s relationship, including Chaz’s proposal to Elia, was captured in his documentary, Being Chaz.
Elia, 36, stood by Bono, 42, throughout his transformation from female to male, during his stint on Dancing With The Stars and through the taping of his documentary, Being Chaz. There does not seem to be any clear explanation as to why this break-up occurred, but it is certainly sad news.
