Before you donate your old books to charity, you should take a look at this series of sculptures by Guy Laramee. The Montreal artist creates beautiful sculptures out of old books. He carves out extremely detailed landscapes and paints in intricate scenes in his project titled Biblios. A vintage book becomes a breathtaking valley, and a series of old encyclopedias morph into a sublime landscape.

In an artist statement, Laramee explains why he started this unusual project, stating, “I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills. Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.”

Check out more of the unique book carvings below.
