It is my opinion that there are not enough feel-good stories in the news these days. So when I come across a story like this one, I can’t help but get a big smile across my face.
South African fast food restaurant chain Wimpy offers accommodations for the visually impaired that allow them to read the menus with the help of braille inscriptions. Wimpy wanted to advertise this fact, so they launched an interesting and thoughtful marketing campaign to let visually impaired citizens know that there were special accommodations for them at Wimpy. Obviously a traditional television or internet ad campaign would not be very effective in this scenario, so Wimpy got creative.
Wimpy had chefs painstakingly adorn 15 burger buns with braille messages crafted out of sesame seeds. Every single sesame seed was placed individually on the burger buns by hand. The sesame seed braille messages spelled out descriptions of the burgers that the visually impaired individuals were about to consume. For instance, one message read “100% Pure Beef Burger Made For You.”
These 15 burgers were then distributed to a handful of individuals at three institutions for the visually impaired in South Africa. Wimpy filmed the reactions of some of the visually impaired individuals lucky enough to ‘see’ their burger through the braille bun, and made it into a commercial.
The commercial claims that the experiences of the 15 individuals who got to try the braille burgers spread to a total of about 800,000 others. According to the commercial, the individuals enjoyed the braille burgers so much that they took to their braille newspapers, publications and screen reader e-mails to share their experiences.
The commercial calls the braille buns “a small gesture.”
“Wimpy wanted to let visually impaired people know that they offered braille menus in all of their restaurants. To spread the word we built braille burgers that blind people could actually read. With the help of skilled chefs we took sesame seeds and meticulously placed them on burger buns so that the seeds formed braille,” Wimpy said of the marketing campaign.
Check out this truly touching and heartwarming commercial recounting the experience. I guarantee that if you watch it, you won’t leave here without a smile on your face.
