LCD Live On In Celluliod

It’s been less than a year since James Murphy and his dance juggernaut LCD Soundsystem called it quits, but to anyone who took a liking to the music (and then immediately became obsessed), it has felt like something grand has been missing from music. Last April, the band played their touted final show at Madison Square Garden in New York, which was a fitting send-off from a band that did not gain over-night success (as Murphy toiled in number of failed bands before starting the DFA record label and standing in the shadows producing other bands).
In the days leading up to that monumental occasion, filmmakers Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace documented Murphy and his band. Over the course of the last half-year, the two filmmakers have edited together a feature film, titled “Shut Up And Play The Hits,” that will premiere January 22nd, at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Judging from the trailer, the film promises to be close-up on the persona and the person that is James Murphy, as well as attempting to place LCD Soundsystem in the broader musical landscape. No doubt, myself and others are waiting with watering mouths to hear what goes on in the mind of one of this generation’s most visionary, versatile, and consistent musical masterminds.
If you haven’t already seen it, I highly encourage you to check out the trailer. Even for people who are casual fans or completely uninformed about Murphy, “Shut Up And Play The Hits” will likely be a fascinating, personal study into the life and planned death of a band.
