Madonna Speaks Out Against Gaga, Stole “Born This Way”
If you are a fan of either Lady Gaga or Madonna, you have probably heard of the controversy of whether or not Gaga stole Madonna’s song “Express Yourself” in order to create “Born This Way.” For the whole year now since Gaga’s gigantic worldwide hit “Born This Way” has come out, many people have brought up this debate and it has triggered warfare between the two sides: Gaga fans and Madonna fans. If you go to the comments section of videos for either of the two pop hits, you will see some vicious attacks back and forth arguing over who is the better artist or, who is the true “Queen of Pop.”
The odd thing is that the two have openly expressed an equal respect for each other. Gaga has always credited Madonna to be a huge inspiration, and Madonna had once called Gaga a “very talented artist” and praised her talent in songwriting. The two also showed up in an SNL skit together, teaming up in 2010 to perform a ‘cat fight’ together. Until now, the two have defied the public’s want to crown one or the other. But recently, in an ABC news interview with Cynthia McFadden, Madonna went on to finally express her opinion of “Born This Way,” in response to the huge critical and fan-based assessment which says it had been ripped off.
In her interview with McFadden, Madonna began, as I stated before, at a standpoint which admired Gaga’s art and respected it as a reinterpretation of what she had done.
“I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done,” she said.
But as soon as “Born This Way” was brought into the picture, there was a serious change of pace: “When I heard it on the radio…I said that sounds very familiar,” Madonna said.
When the pop superstar was asked if that initial reaction felt annoying, she responded, “It felt reductive,” and told McFadden that she should “look it up,” shortly followed by a sly smile as she drank her tea cup.
I sense a future of perhaps a lot less admiration for one another. What do you think about the two songs? Did Gaga rip off Madonna? Check them both out below:
