Reznor Talks Nine Inch Nails in 2012
The last six months has seen an interesting trend of 90s musicians breaking their silence and regrouping out of nowhere. From At the Drive-In to Neutral Milk Hotel to Blink 182, there seems to be something in the water for rock’n’roll. Nine Inch Nails has become the latest to join this group.
It only seems like yesterday, but Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails, the iconic industrial rock moniker that he released music under, has been on hiatus for two years already. It might not seem like that long because Reznor has managed to stay in the spotlight by writing the scores for two critically-acclaimed David Fincher films, The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. In addition, since putting NIN on an indefinite break, Reznor started a band with his wife called How To Destroy Angels, which has released music sporadically, but has promised a full-length debut in the first-half of 2012.
Taking all of these projects into account (not to mention, you know, marriage), Reznor has been an incredibly busy man since putting his brainchild to bed, so it comes as somewhat of a surprise that he plans on reawakening Nine Inch Nails in 2012.
In an interview with Billboard, Reznor said, “I’m going to be writing for Nine Inch Nails this year… [I don't] have any particular goal in mind other than… my voice as a songwriter feels like it needs to speak up or at least work out a little bit to not atrophy.”
In truth, the statement spells itself out to be a bit vague. Anyone that has followed the Reznor-saga should be aware that the man is a perfectionist and just because he says he is writing for Nine Inch Nails does not mean that he is going to be releasing a new record in the near future.
Regardless, it will be interesting to see what Reznor is able to come up with, which is likely to be something considering the fact that ever since he kicked drugs and booze he has been on a career high, making his best music since the modern rock masterpiece The Downward Spiral.
