The term “anamorphosis” has been thrown around in the art world recently. This technique is defined by Wikipedia as “a distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to use special devices or occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image.” This extremely difficult process involves more than a steady hand and a can of spray paint. Visualizing the art is relative to the observer’s position, and the Madrid-based street artist collective Boa Mistura (or “good mixture” in English) understands the art of perspective.

The artists explain their process on their website: “Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick have developed their work in different fields, applying both a diversity of styles and the different views of each member. Boa Mistura represents a mixture of perspectives which complement, influence and mix themselves together in order to create something better. From graffiti and mural painting, to graphic design and illustration, Boa Mistrua want to give the world its colour back. 5 heads, 10 hands, just one heart.”

The five artists have taken their heart and vision to South America where they created an amazing anamorphosis in a favela in São Paulo, Brazil. This Participative Urban Art project transformed dull “vecos” and “vielas” (winding streets) into colorful burrows with messages of love and hope. These intricate streets represent the insulated life of the favela, and these five men worked with locals to expand their environment through art.

Boa Mistura covered the walls with bold colors and created a 3D illusion with words. These messages can only be seen from a distance. View more images below. For more information, visit the Boa Mistura website.
