Indiana Lawmaker Regrets (Somewhat) Criticism of Girl Scouts
The Girl Scouts of America are under attack yet again. This time it’s not about sexual orientation or the excess fat and sugar found in the famous cookie collection; no, this time it’s core family values that are in question.
In less than a week, the Girl Scouts of America celebrate their 100th anniversary. This would normally be met with a celebratory event, and it will be in the Girl Scout’s camp. However, Rep. Bob Morris, a Republican representing Fort Wayne, Indiana, won’t be attending, nor will his two daughters who he recently pulled out of the organization.
In a letter obtained by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette directed to Morris’ Republican House colleagues, Morris claimed, “After talking to some well-informed constituents, I did a small amount of Web-based research, and what I found is disturbing,” adding, “[The Girl Scout Organization] has entered into a close strategic affiliation with Planned Parenthood,” which he claims is trying to “sexualiz(e) young girls through the Girl Scouts.”
In a statement just days later, the Indiana lawmaker told CNN, “I realize now that my words were emotional, reactionary, and inflammatory,” he wrote, apologizing, “In hindsight, I should never have written the letter.”
In response, the Girl Scouts of America said, “We agree that the letter was a mistake and that it’s time to move on. On behalf of the millions of girls in Girl Scouting: apology accepted.”
For most people, that would have squashed the discussion; however, Morris continues to stand behind his opposition of any connection the organization has with Planned Parenthood, even though the Girl Scouts’ website states that it “does not have a relationship or partnership with Planned Parenthood.”
Morris has gone on to say that First Lady Michelle Obama’s association with the Girl Scouts organization (she serves as honorary president), “should give each of us reason to pause before our individual or collective endorsement of the organization,” calling the first lady “radically pro-abortion.”
Perhaps unbeknown to Rep. Morris, it is customary that each first lady serve as honorary president of the Girl Scouts of America.
Happy Anniversary to the Girl Scouts of America and may you always remember why you joined the organization in the first place – to have fun while learning about being a well-adjusted human being.
