Wine Margaritas for National Margarita Day [Recipe]
While last night’s Fat Tuesday festivities may have come to a close, albeit a little past midnight, there’s no reason to stop partying. Today also marks a sacred holiday–National Margarita Day. Though I am a tequila fan, I haven’t had that experience that’s killed the blue agave spirit for me yet. If that’s the case for you, there are plenty of spots in your town serving up the holiday’s celebrated cocktail at Happy Hour prices for tonight’s post work drink-of-choice and excuse for an extended Mardi Gras (provided you didn’t give any of it up for Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday today). But if you can’t stomach the Cuervo, there’s a tasty, if strange-sounding, alternative: wine margaritas.
Often a creative substitute at restaurants with a beer and wine license but not one for liquor, the drink swaps Sauvignon Blanc for the “hard A.” It keeps your other favorite elements of the classic, most notably the lime juice and the cointreau or the triple sec, and a sugar-rimmed glass. More than one will also guarantee that sugary margarita hangover, but, hey, it’s a holiday. If you’re a Los Angeleno, you can raise a glass at the Kay n’ Dave’s‘ Brentwood location. Otherwise, toast your girlfriends (or guy friends) with this sweet homemade recipe from Simon & Schuster’s Tips on Life and Love. Cheers!
INGREDIENTS
4 ounces fresh lime juice (4 to 5 limes)
2 ounces fresh lemon juice
2 ounces fresh orange juice
1/4 cup granulated sugar
4 ounces Cointreau or Triple Sec
1 bottle Sauvignon Blanc (preferably from New Zealand), chilled
ice cubes
lime wedges for garnish
Combine the fruit juices and sugar in a pitcher and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Stir in the Cointreau, wine, and a few ice cubes. Pour into wineglasses over a few ice cubes and garnish each with a lime wedge; salt optional.
