Is Botox For You?
As the most popular cosmetic treatment in the United States, Botox is widely used by women and men of all ages. Although the procedure is popular, it also scares many people because of the confusion and questions they have about the treatment and what it actually entails.
Is Botox right for you? One of my favorite beauty sites, Allure.com, helped answer my questions.
Will it prevent wrinkles?
Botox prevents wrinkles because the toxins it includes can temporarily reduce and erase horizontal forehead lines, vertical frown lines, and crow’s feet. The injections will slow your muscles that contract hundreds of times a day, making lines in your skin. It can also lift the corners of the mouth that sag with age, smooth out your chin, and soften neck and mouth lines.
Will it make me look frozen and feel numb?
Botox will not affect the nerves that cause sensation or make you feel numb. When used right, it can actually lift your brow to make you look better. If too much is injected into the horizontal lines in your forehead, though, you can run the risk of looking frozen, so be careful. Just be sure that you see a doctor who is experienced in knowing how much you need in each specific area.
Does it hurt?
Yes, it can be slightly painful, especially between your brows. Some doctors will offer topical anesthesia to numb the pain a bit or use ice.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are generally mild, but there are still some. In one to five percent of cases, the eyelid or eyebrow can droop a bit, but it will usually go away. Some patients also experience bruising.
How much does it cost?
Prices vary, but the average is around $400/treatment. Like we said earlier, choose an experienced doctor, not one you see offering an insane deal on one of your favorite money saving sites.
What’s the ideal age to start using Botox?
A patient can start using Botox whenever they start to get annoyed by their wrinkles. There is absolutely no issue with long term use.
How long does it last?
It varies, like anything else, but usually it will last around four months.
What can I expect the day after my treatment?
Not much…results will start to show over the course of two weeks; so if you have a big event, get the treatment a few weeks ahead of time. You can apply makeup immediately after but avoid heavy workouts for 24-hours.
