Free Music Roundup – Week One
“Some of the best things in life really are free.” As a poor, struggling writer, that statement is my mantra. There is virtually no better feeling than getting something great without having to pay for it.
Music is no exception.
So instead of pirating some music, stealing a CD from your buddy, or listening to (shudder) Rihanna, check out some of the best tunes to surface on the Internet’s free music blogs. Check them out, download them, listen to them, then support the artists that you love…this week in our “Music Blog Roundup.”

Alpine - “Hands” - ”We like to have a good time, all the time,” says Alpine guitarist Christian O’ Brien. After listening to “Hands,” I’d have to agree. Alpine has recorded a hip, edgy, slightly eerie track that’ll still make you want to get up and dance.
Rogerseventytwo – “You Take Me Higher (Kids At The Bar Remix)” – An awesome, upbeat, fun track from Rogerseventytwo, remixed by Kids At The Bar. This is the type of track my friends and I like to call “happy house,” upbeat techno music that puts a smile on your face. Definitely add this one to your Ipod before you go out next weekend.
Tanlines – “Brothers” – The Indie Spotlight single of the week on Itunes. An excellent, slightly different track from the indie duo. One of those rare slow-build songs that holds your attention the whole way through. The song’s hypnotic beat is perfect for a workout or playing in the background of a small get-together.
Papa – “Aint it So”- From the album A Good Woman is Hard to Find (great title), this song is perfect for the beginning of spring and the oncoming warmer weather. Put the windows down and blast this baby on your way to the beach or (if you have to) on the way to work.

Sleigh Bells – “Irreplaceable” - Up-and-coming indie band Sleigh Bells have had quite a couple of months, performing on Saturday Night Live and making the cover of Spin Magazine’s “New” issue. This cover of Beyonce’s song is an odd match that works perfectly. Click on the link and check out their mellow take.

The Shins - “Point of Morrow” - The Shin’s new album is an instant classic, improving on all aspects of their music without deviating too much from the folky, classic sound that made them an indie mainstay. Click the link to stream the entire album for free.
