Lil Wayne’s “Devol” Album of Love Songs

He may have shown his sensitive side when he released the single “How to Love,” but rapper Lil’ Wayne isn’t curbing the TLC just yet. Recently, Weezy told MTV his new album, Devol, will be full of “his version” of love songs. But before fans get starry-eyed, the rapper isn’t going sappy on anyone.
“What I mean by my version of love songs is they’re not saying ‘I love you,’” the rapper cheekily tells interviewer Amanda Seales as they share a laugh in an exclusive for the music network’s new talk show, Hip Hop POV.
Lil’ Wayne conceived of the new LP while imprisoned at Rikers Island in 2010. The title Devol, pronounced “devil,” is an anagram for the album content.
“That’s ‘loved’ spelled backwards,” Weezy told Seales.
The rapper was working on Devol at the same time he released I Am Not a Human Being in September 2010, while still in prison. His latest album since his discharge, Tha Carter IV, sold 964,000 copies in its first week and featured “How to Love” and “She Will.”
Born as Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., the musician grew up in a tough New Orleans neighborhood. He joined the group Hot Boys in the late 90s but didn’t enjoy much success as a solo artist until the mid 2000′s. In 2005, he notoriously crowned himself “the best rapper alive” when he put out Tha Carter II and proceeded to prove it with 2008′s Tha Carter III, the LP of “Lollipop,” “Got Money,” and “A Milli” that logged more than one million album sales in its first week.
Though his song topics have varied greatly, from the typical girls-and-money bit to titles which delve into his personal psyche, Weezy has never fully tackled romance, let alone produced an entire album’s worth of it. With the rapper’s distinct clarification, however, it seems he won’t stray too far from his standard, if brilliant, verse. Devol doesn’t have a release date yet, but the content shapes up to make the perfect summer soundtrack. Too bad I Am Not A Human Being 2 already snagged that spot.
