’20s Inspired Fashion Trend
Maybe it’s because I’m anticipating the release of Baz Luhrmann’s take on The Great Gatsby, but I can’t stop noticing the ’20s inspired fashion trend popping up everywhere. The 1920s represent a decade that is always romanticized for its flapper girl fashions and speakeasy mischief. Luhrmann’s production does nothing to rid our association between glam fashion and the roaring twenties with the trailer featuring ’20s fashion trends like jeweled drop waist dresses, scalloped and fringed edges, and, of course, beautiful head pieces.
Katy Perry was recently seen channeling Daisy Buchanan with a full ’20s look, complete with pearls, a head piece, and a satin gown. Though the full look may have been a bit of an overkill on the fashion trend, the separate pieces were great ’20s-inspired accessories. Her head piece was definitely a highlight of the look and a good example of the pairing of vintage hair waves and the ’20s inspired head band. If you want to recreate your own Daisy Buchanan look using a jeweled head piece, check out this Deepa Gurnani headband found on Shopbop. Its jeweled applique is the perfect topper to a vintage hairstyle.
The flapper dresses that are making their 2012 resurgence in fashion are often characterized by their drop waists, fringe, jewel and scallop detailing, and the boyish, square cuts. These dresses are all over fashion runways and stores. This French Connection Flapper Dress is a great ’20s-inspired dress for a modern girl. It has the traditional fringe detailing without going overboard and the square cut that is complemented with a scoop neck. If you are looking for the ’20s touches without going for the full dress, check out these Nasty Gal shorts appropriately named the Fitzgerald Beaded Shorts. They have the scalloped edges and beaded detail that are very signature of the prohibition era but offer a bit more comfort since they are shorts.
When you are trying out some Great Gatsby fashion choices, finish off the look with vintage-inspired makeup and hairstyles. Fingers waves and red lips are always a glam choices to accompany a ’20s look.
