Dudepins: The Male Pinterest

Of all the Pinterest copycats and spin-offs and mash-ups out there, this one is my favorite to date. Called Dudepins, the self-described online pinboard for men provides a space for men to “man up, sign up, and pin up” without being flooded with pictures of babies, mini pie recipes, weddings, and arts and crafts. Instead, when one lands on the home page, he will find an oasis of guns, bacon, cigars, and a man kit. (A few babies somehow still managed to make it on the site, though).
“We wanted to create a community of awesomeness. This is a website where people can share sweet male-oriented content with friends,” says Dudepins.
The site, which looks to operate exactly like Pinterest (as a girl, I haven’t actually checked it out), targets the gaping gap in the market Pinterest leaves with its estrogen-dominated traffic numbers. CNN reports that there are twenty million people on Pinterest. About 83% of them are women. You don’t even have to do math to add that up.
Dudepins isn’t the only testosterone-targeted Pinterest look-a-like; the site joins Manteresting, PunchPin, Gentlemint, and Dartitup–all launched within the last six months. It does most closely follow the Pinterest format, however. Like Pinterest, Dudepins has an “Everything” section (with categories like “Man Caves” and “Dude Stuff” added with its demographic in mind) along with the “Videos” section that occupies the Pinterest header. Though “Popular” is replaced with “Trending” and there’s no gifts section, the look is pretty darn close. The same goes for the actual organization and layout of the pins on the site. The “pin” button is substituted for the tongue-in-cheek “pin-up” button.
The site’s creators, Colin Brown and Kyle Syzbalski, are two techies from Vancouver who say Dudepins was created using this method, “It was a flawless formula. Dudepins = 2 dudes + 2 computers + 1 idea + infinite scotch – non-infinite income = Dudepins!”
Huffington Post reports that the two told the Washington Post in May that since its inception, Dudepins has been growing at a rate of 30 to 50% week, though they’ve had trouble maintaining interest due to over-saturation.
There’s only so much room for pinboards of beer bongs.
