DOOM Releases “Gov’nor”

If you’re looking for one of the most enigmatic entities in music, you’re not going to have to look farther than DOOM. Formerly know as MF DOOM and occasionally known as Viktor Vaughn, DOOM pokes his head out of his own strange fantasy work once in awhile to drop a new album. More times than not, these records are monumental works of oddball hip-hop that mix sci-fi movie quotes, odd time signatures, and some of the most surreal, creative emcee work you’ll find easily.
For the last year, there’s been news of a new DOOM record under the name JJ DOOM (the JJ comes from Jneiro Jarel who has produced the LP). Details have been hard to come by until recently, but the last couple of months have seen some new leaks of info. For one, Damon Albarn was announced to be a guest vocalist on the track “Bite the Thong,” while “Rhymin’ Slang” was leaked as well.
However, the album finally has a full tracklisting as well as a new track to sink your teeth into. This time around we get the Regular Show-sampling “Guv’nor.” If you’re not familiar with Regular Show, it is one of the best shows on Cartoon Network, and you’d be doing yourself (and your endorphins) a favor by checking it out. “Guv’nor” is a play on one of the show’s episodes called “’Ello Guv’nor” which is a horror film within the show that creeps-out the raccoon, Rigby. Throughout the track, you can hear snippets of dialogue from the episode as well as Rigby’s classic scream.
Lyrically, DOOM sounds as fired up as ever. “A volcano out of Iceland/He’ll conquer and destroy the rap world like the White Man,” he spits in the opening bars of the track. Janeiro Janel’s production work sits closely to DOOM’s own (he produces most of his own work), so this hardly feels like collaboration but rather the next chapter in the DOOM saga. While the beat is unwavering in its persistence, the samples and jazzy snare hits keep the song from treading into territory that can bore. With a name as attention grabbing as “Guv’nor,” DOOM’s lyrical work and JJ’s talent live up to the righteousness of such a name.
The new JJ DOOM album Keys to the Kuffs is set to drop on August 21 and the tracklist can be found below. Until then, you can listen to “Gov’nor” below, and that should tide you over.
