“Boy Meets World” Spin-Off In Development
If you’ve clicked the link to read this article, chances are you grew up in the 90s. Most of the kids I work with don’t even know what Boy Meets World is and don’t much care to. However, there’s no denying the force it had on a generation of teens. Some of us occasionally watch an episode or two of it when it’s on MTV2 in the morning. It was one of the last shows that adhered to the family-friendly sitcom before a major change occurred. If you flip through your television guide, I dare you to try to find a show that’s as classically cheesy as Step By Step or Boy Meets World. It’s a sign of the times that not all is well in America. The facade of the perfect family has been exposed, and now our television shows deal with the horrific, the fantastic, or the downright inane.
But maybe there’s hope for this new generation to have its own cheesy, feel-good show. Disney has announced that it’s currently developing the Boy Meets World spin-off Girl Meets World. Thankfully, Disney is looking to maintain some semblance of integrity on this project, as they’ve made it clear they are seeking Cory and Topanga to reprise their roles. If you haven’t put it together, the “Girl” of this world would be Cory and Topanga’s daughter. This opens up a few interesting avenues for the developers of the show because they would be able to reference Boy Meets World as well as explore some of the more female oriented dilemmas of growing up in America.
The details at the moment are scant, but Disney seems to be jumping on this idea pretty hard already. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see it in the Disney/ABC line-up by next year. I’d say between buying Lucasfilms and a Boy Meets World spin-off, Disney had a big week.
