Black Lips Working on Guest-Heavy New LP

When the line-up for the first annual SS Coachella was announced, it was the first we had heard from the Black Lips since their declaration to tour the Middle East. It’s been a year and a half since their last LP, the stellar Arabia Mountain. Normally these guys crank out records once a year; but since they hooked up with production genius Mark Ronson, they seem to be taking their time on new material. If it ends up sounding anything like their last effort, more power to them.
For those of us who missed out on the SS Coachella, we have some good news coming back to us. Apparently, the band has just sent in their first batch of demos to Ronson in anticipation of a new album. Obviously, Ronson is onboard to produce his second straight Lips record, and the band is revving up for it. The band is taking a few new avenues for the album, as singer Cole Alexander explained.
Apparently, Brent Hinds of Mastodon is making an appearance on banjo to give the track an authentic Southern twang. We shouldn’t forget that the Atlanta rock scene is a close-knit group, as seen in We Fun (which you should definitely check out). While Hinds has always been an open-minded musician when it comes to collaborations (Mars Volta), the garage rock tendencies of the Black Lips seem like a great way to expand for him.
Beyond these facts, it sounds like Alexander is wishing for this to be a dream album of sorts. “Maybe Bradford Cox will come on and do something,” he said, referring to Deerhunter’s frontman, with whom he has a past in Ghetto Cross and as a guest on Microcastle.
While we are still months away from a new Black Lips album, this one stands as the most exciting on paper. Also, there is talk about Killer Mike, another Atlanta native, appearing on the album. Don’t believe me? Check this out.
