A world away from the BANGSTYLE HQ here in Los Angeles is Tim’s Haircut, a salon with an edgy vibe and a killer playlist in Helsinborg, Sweden. I have a somewhat romantic view of the Swedish (mostly stemming from the fact that I believe they are infinitely cooler than the rest of us), and Tim of Tim’s Haircut didn’t do much to change that perception. This hip salon, in its current location, has been open since 1999 with a salon team that is passionate about hair and gives their clients an awesome experience.

Tim even left us with food for thought with the saying, “Your hair should frame your face, not your ass.”

BANGSTYLE: Can you give us a bit of background information on the salon?

Tim: Tim’s Haircut was actually established in 1990, but the salon in its current form opened in 1999 in the premises where it is located today. I have been the owner of the company since it was established and worked for many years as a technician for a couple of different brands, both nationally and internationally, but decided a few years ago to put all my focus on the salon.

BANGSTYLE: When and why did you decide to open your own salon?

Tim: I had been renting a chair in a salon for many years when my longing for doing my own thing became too great. I had my head full of ideas on how a salon should be and how I wanted the customers to feel. I didn’t really think about opening my own salon; but in order to realize my dream and my ideas, I had to grab the opportunity.

When I (thanks to a customer, actually) found this place, I saw all the potential it had. I wanted to create a sense of “my space” and simply invite my friends there to let them experience what I see as my world, including my favorite music, décor, and everything in-between. I wanted it to feel like they came to my place, to my home, to me.

BANGSTYLE: Do you have any advice for aspiring salon owners?

Tim: Follow your heart and observe other salons and let them inspire you. In which ways are they really successful and what can you do better? Don’t be afraid to set your trademark on your salon. We have a saying in Sweden, “You’ll get the customers you deserve.”

BANGSTYLE: What is the vibe and décor of the salon? What is the inspiration behind the feel of the salon?

Tim: I want it to feel modern, yet with an interior design that is timeless– a little cocky and a little lounge, mixed with a large portion of modesty and infectious creativity. I don’t want it to be perfect because that is boring to the eye. I want the customer to feel relaxed in an exclusive and unconventional environment.

BANGSTYLE: What’s on the salon’s playlist?

Tim: Music is a vital part of the salon, and I’ve always had a soft spot for electronic music. Our list is mostly filled with House Music, Electronica, and Electro House. When it comes to the playlist, I’m an autocrat! But I still try to find music that everyone likes…

Listen to my Spotify playlist: Music for Haircuts.

BANGSTYLE: What is the clientele like?

Tim: We have all kinds of customers in the salon, the most wonderful customers you could imagine. A perfect mix, and that’s really good.

BANGSTYLE: What do you look for in the hair stylists that you employ?

Tim: A person who’s not afraid of changes, who’s always up for new challenges,  and whose creativity can rub off on the entire staff. A person who can find beauty in everyone and understands what Tim’s Haircut is all about.

BANGSTYLE: What is Tim’s Haircut known for?

Tim: We are known for our passion for hair and beauty, for treating our customers like friends, for always being one step ahead, for winning the award “Business of the Year” in Sweden in 2004, and being nominated again in 2007 – among other things.

BANGSTYLE: What’s your advice for a client who wants a new style?

Tim: Don’t be afraid! Put your stylist in charge and relax. It’s just hair; it grows back!

BANGSTYLE: Who and what inspires the looks you create?

Tim: My colleagues and I try to trigger each other to come up with new hairstyles. I look for inspiration in travel and music. I like to create a mood with a haircut or color. Customers also bring inspiration with all their ideas and visions; most trends start in the streets, not in the salons.

BANGSTYLE: Any at-home hair tips you want to share with out readers?

Tim: You can save a penny or two if you buy your products on some dodgy site on the Internet, but – listen to your stylist! He or she knows what’s best for your hair and what you need to style your hair at home.

BANGSTYLE: Any future goals or plans with the salon?

Tim: I love to plan for the future, and I always make a lot of new plans. But at the moment, I want to focus on creating a really strong team and developing the salon concept.
