At Revolution Hairdressing clients can expect a relaxing, one-on-one experience with a quality, professional stylist. Andre and Sandra Faiva used their talents and experiences in the hair industry to open Revolution Hairdressing, a boutique salon in Brisbane. Check out our interview with Andre and Sandra to find out more about their successful careers and their salon!
BANGSTYLE: How long has Revolution Hairdressing been around?
Revolution: Our salon has being around for 2 ½ years, but Sandra and Andre Faiva have a combined 45 years experience within the Industry.
BANGSTYLE: What were your experiences in the industry prior to opening the salon?
Revolution: Prior to our current salon we (Sandra and I) worked and owned 2 Toni & Guy salons for 9 years, but worked for Toni & Guy for 14 years in total. Andre Faiva was the Education Director for Toni & Guy Australia and Sandra headed up the Long hair / Session team. Prior to Toni & Guy Sandra spent several years working at Vidal Sassoon in Mayfair London and Andre was working in a leading salon in his native country New Zealand.
BANGSTYLE: What was the inspiration to open Revolution Hairdressing?
Revolution: After several years working in very large and structured hair salon environments, we wanted to have a smaller boutique salon space that was more personal and one-on-one with our clients. We also have two small children and wanted a salon that offered us more flexibility and creative freedom.
BANGSTYLE: What is the vibe and décor like? What is on the playlist?
Revolution: Our salon is in an old wool store warehouse with 4 ½ meter ceilings with exposed beams which we love. The design is quite eclectic and bright. We have an old trestle table as our front desk and beautiful Scandinavian furniture pieces scattered throughout. I’m a bit of a music snob, but there is always Radiohead and David Bowie on every playlist, but at present, we are loving Jake Bugg and the new Tame Impala album.
BANGSTYLE: What kind of client experience do you like to create?
Revolution: We like to create a one-on-one client experience. We offer a relaxing environment that is focused on great hair and the client’s needs. Our salon space is very chilled and laid back. The more relaxed the client is, the easier it is for them to communicate and express their needs. We want every client to feel like they are getting our absolute focus and attention.
BANGSTYLE: What is the clientele like?
Revolution: Our clientele are working professionals who appreciate quality and creativity. Most of Revolution’s clients are strong, confident women who are quite successful and accomplished in their own careers. They appreciate the fact we do great hair without all the fluff.
BANGSTYLE: Who or what inspires the work you create?
Revolution: I’ve always loved David Bowie for his originality and I’ve always said I wanted to create a photographic collection that looks and reflects, to me, what Radiohead’s OK Computeralbum sounds like. In general, we are just inspired by what we are seeing and liking at any given time. In this day and age, there are so many points of inspiration with multi/social media it’s hard not to be inspired every day. We love checking Bangstyle everyday to see what the rest of the world’s hairdressing communities are up to.
BANGSTYLE: Do you specialize in any look or cut in particular?
Revolution: Not one thing in particular. We offer full hairdressing services from cut and colour to extensions and formal hair. Lately though, we’ve had a few clients claim that we are the ‘Kings of Belyage / Ombre colouring’. We do soooo much of it.
BANGSTYLE: What is Revolution known for?
Revolution: We have always being known to our clients for the strength of our cutting and colouring. Also for being pretty chilled and relaxed in our approach to hairdressing. We don’t take ourselves too serious. Within Australia, Sandra and Andre are renowned for their education and platform work. Sandra is a Session Master and Educator with the Australian Kevin Murphy creative team and Andre is the National Educator for EVO Haircare and Cloud Nine. They have been educating throughout Australia and Asia for 12 years for Toni & Guy, Wella, L’Oreal, Ozdare and Haircare Australia.
BANGSTYLE: What do you look for in the stylists for the salon?
Revolution: We believe we can teach anyone to be a good technical hairdresser, if they have the 4 core traits we look for: Passion, Attitude, Honesty and Personality. Good style and fashion sense are always a plus, but Passion, Attitude, Honesty & Personality are essential. They are key fundamental traits in hairdressing that you just can’t teach.
BANGSTYLE: Any future plans or goal for the salon?
Revolution: We have just relocated to our new premises 6 months ago and our business has gone from strong to stronger. We are looking to build up our team over the next 6 months and to start developing our own education calendar and courses in our salon on Mondays and Tuesdays.
