Winter whites led the way at Milan Fashion Week this season, followed by shades of gray and suits of black. Elegance set stage as it usually does in Milan to show off its best fabrics and ornate features. Wednesday Addams hair made a big splash at Prada as pussy bows reigned supreme over more traditional versions. Echoes of Karl Lagerfeld's passing were felt at each show and especially at his final iterations at Fendi. As each catwalk withered, the notion of fashion as political seemed to grow stronger. When it came to the hair, there was a mix of 60s bouffant seen at Moschino with slick looks seen at Alberta Ferretti, Prada, and Max Mara. Beauty was clean with pops of color and styles we all over the map with a common thread of empowerment running through it all. Keep reading to see behind the scenes of some of our favorite shows!

Alberta Ferretti

Taking a break from her usual ethereal touch, Alberta Ferretti was a vision in winter whites, offering daywear options for the modern woman. Layered looks and wide legs pants, leather jackets and stitched pants, there seemed to be a fit and flare for everyone’s wish and want. 80s glamour was reimagined with the typical feminine flair Ferretti is known for. Instead of floor-grazing gowns, jaws dropped at her ruffled blouses and structured pantsuits and gilded dresses – is this the new Ferretti? Center parts accompanied low volume lengths and barely bent ends.

To get sleek strands, it starts with the prep.“My key product at the Alberta Ferretti show is the NEW Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame to tame frizz and heat protect the hair. I’ve blow dried the hair smooth then added a bit of intentional texture back into the lengths with an iron and Redken Triple Dry 15 Dry Texture Spray. The result is a luxurious finish; a texture that has become quite popular… it’s easy, but it has a ‘finish,’ so it’s not completely natural," says Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. "I think most women want ease with their hair. We are seeing a trend to more ‘done’ hair, but this is a more basic type of ‘done’ hair. The blowout used to be the basic finish, but this to me is the new basic ‘done’ hair of today. This is how ‘real’ hair looks in fashion… it’s also a way that real women can ‘do’ their hair because the idea of truly air-drying their hair can cause worry that it’ll turn into a mess. These little tricks keep things natural, but polished,” adds Palau.

Moncler

All wrapped up and ready to go, Moncler Fall/Winter 2019 show at Milan Fashion Week was a thing of beauty. Models made their way through haunted woods in their best puffers and balaclavas. Hair took on a new texture as a drove of designers each had their own interpretations on the classics of this supremely popular brand. To let the styles shine, Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau created a minimalistic look. “We’ve done a dual-texture ponytail at Moncler, with a futuristic twist. I’ve used Redken Headwear Gel 16 around the crown to keep it close to the head shape with the ponytail itself left dry, with the end result being a bit minimalistic. Often at shows, we’re trying to add personality to the look, but at the Moncler presentation, we were actually trying to take personality away as there are a lot of looks for the brand today and we wanted the hair to not distract from the clothing in a futuristic way. I finished the look off with a few spritzes of Redken Triple Take 32 Hairspray to hold it,” says Palau.

  6. Begin working Redken Headwear Gel 16 throughout your top layer at the back of your head close to your head shape, using a fine-toothed comb as you go to secure the gelled hair down until you reach the crown.

Prada

Buckled black jackets and modern floral prints with a 3D flair juxtaposed militarized jackets and lace capes with a dystopian vibe.  While some note her use of utilitarianism, others mentioned her effort to lighten the air with her use of florals. Miuccia Prada is often known for her political awareness – something she doesn’t try to hide on stage or behind the scenes. When it came to the hair, there were a plethora of shades and plaits that were beautifully monochromatic and endlessly lengthy. Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau and Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood worked together to cut, color and style each model to absolute perfection.

“We’ve dyed some girls black and some girls baby blonde here at the Prada show in collaboration with Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood. The whole show concept is a ‘dark romance,’ with a nod to a gothic-y kind of girl with the braids and some extreme haircuts that have been dyed black. There are references to the 20s as well, but then we also have some simple middle-parting ponytails at the show with the accents of these extreme looks. The combinations of the looks make them stand out, which is very Prada, as a subversive idea of beauty. The three main hairstyles you’ll see are these bobs, the braids, and the ponytails. My key products today are Redken Dry Texture Dry Shampoo Paste 05 to perfect the braids, Redken Forceful 23 Hairspray for the extreme hold, the extreme shapes and the high shine, Redken Satinwear 04 to heat protect as we style these extreme looks.” – Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. When it came to hair color, Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood created styles to match the collective vision. “It’s what we’ve called ‘radical normal.’ There are no medium or graded colours on the 20 girls we created looks for – they’re polarizing versions of a blue-black vs platinum. My team worked for two days in Milan, colouring the model’s hair to embrace the vision of Mrs. Prada and Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. We used combinations of Redken Chromatics, Redken Color Gels Lacquers, Redken Shades EQ, and Redken Flashlift with Bonder Inside to achieve these looks, using Redken Color Extend Blondage Shampoo and Conditioner on the blondes as we went and Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo and Conditioner on the black color,” says Wood.
