As we embark on a New Year of goals, movements, and trends we see one, in particular, come to the forefront of the styling world – the return of THE CUT! Sam Villa, Co-Founder of Sam Villa and Global Artistic Ambassador for Redken 5th Avenue believes, “the past is where we learn and the future is where we apply it.”  Celebrating the start of a new series of styles, he offers his top tips for achieving the most coveted cuts!

Classic cutting principles are back, combined with contemporary methods like internal disconnection, to produce movement and strong structured modern lines with disheveled silhouettes. New layering methods with detached irregular patterns and clashing fractured tiers are what will make THE CUT of 2018 stand out.

“Women want lived-in looks, working with short exterior layers with longer interior layers and textured crowns creates that natural movement and organic texture that women are loving right now,” says Villa.

Tips

  1. Think Classic, Act Modern – The shag, bob and pixie silhouettes can be deconstructed to be looser and softer, basically more natural looking, to fit modern lifestyles.
  2. Don’t be Afraid of Disconnection – It can be personalized to elevate almost any cut…take time to explain what it can do, if a guest truly understands, they will love it.
  3. Frame the Face with Fringe – It’s the ultimate accessory that can be customized to enhance facial features and compliment hair type – think shattered, chewed, sweeping and short.
  4. Organic Texture - Textures will continue to have a connection to nature.  They are organic and look natural even though some or all of it is created with advanced techniques, products, and tools.  Keep this in mind when cutting.
