In honor of Karl, the 2023 Met Gala’s official theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. Many wore tributes to the designer with his own designs and others worked with fashion houses to create a nod to the celebrated designer. There were many standout moments at the Met last evening and while many of them centered around the designs — the hairstyles also became a highlight. From Jessica Chastain’s Icy Blonde strands to the debut of Florence Pugh’s shaved head or Michaela Cole’s braids — we loved how individuality reigned supreme as they celebrated Lagerfeld.

Hairstyles from The 2023 Met Gala

A night to celebrate style – this year's Met Gala also highlighted each person's individuality. While common themes were apparent throughout, each person made it their own.

Texture

Up, half-up or down, what most of the hairstyles had in common was texture. Natural or heat styled, we loved everything from Gabrielle Union’s mermaid waves to Rita Ora’s beach waves and Lizzo and Julia Garner’s ringlets.

Baby Bangs

From classic to punk rock, baby bangs made quite a statement at the 2023 Met Gala. Lily James wore a modern take on the trend and Olivia Rodrigo paired hers with a more classic up style to enhance her Old Hollywood vibe.

Sculptural Elements

Leave it to Janelle Monae to turn heads at the Met Gala. The celebrity captured the attention for miles around with her sculptural top knot and FKA Twigs’ look blended classic styling with equally mesmerizing architectural elements. Also on our love-it list was Quinta Brunson with a show stopping updo that everyone will be buzzing over this season.

Voluminous Finishes

90s supermodel blowouts have been back for a minute, but the Met Gala was proof of their continued popularity. Keke Palmer was breathtaking with her voluminous finish, while Amanda Seyfried rocked disco curls and Ashley Park also turned the volume up a few notches.

Sleek

Take your pick from ponytails to down ‘dos. In contrast to the big and voluminous finishes, we saw plenty of smooth and sleek ones. Rachel Brosnaham, Paris Hilton and Mary J. Blige rocked sleek ponytails, while Maude Apatow and Lily Collins used sleek finishes to highlight a bob (or faux bob) finish.
