We are constantly seeing new techniques in styling, from dry cutting to curved shears and new ways to texturize. An artists experimentation can lead to brilliance and that is what Andrew Carruthers, Director of Education for Sam Villa, has created with his latest, using the Sam Villa Texturizing Razor (6 gap) to cut face framing layers on dry hair.

“I like to use a 6 gap razor to cut framing layers because you can get a highly textured feel in one step, and doing it on dry hair allows you to visually see the impact of each cut,” says Carruthers.

How to Create Face Framing Layers with a Razor

  • Designate how much hair should be cut to frame the face – be careful not to go too far back and lose the frame of the perimeter.
  • Apply Redken Shine Flash 02 glistening mist to hair to give it slip so razor glides.
  • Take a diagonal section from the fringe area and over direct it to the opposite cheek bone.  Hold section at a low 45° angle (for softness) and keep fingers perpendicular to the grain of the hair.
  • With a light gentle stroking motion, move back and forth with the razor until hair is removed.  It will take multiple cuts, that is what creates the softness.
  • Take the next section and over direct to the opposite side to the guide – it doesn’t have to line up exactly, if it’s disconnected a bit it will be fine. Hold section at a low 45° angle and keep fingers perpendicular to the grain of the hair.
  • With a light gentle stroking motion, move back and forth with the razor until hair is removed.
  • Repeat through the section until the face is framed with layers.

“I know we were taught in beauty school not to use a razor on dry hair, but hey, rules were meant to be broken…and these face framing layers are so easy to do on dry hair,” adds Carruthers.

The Sam Villa Razor offers ergonomic comfort, balance and a swivel design that allows freedom of movement and precision control. Top quality, Teflon-coated stainless steel blades give a sharp smooth cut and the interchangeable blades are perfect for classic straight razor cutting, blending or creating bold texture.

To style the hair, Carruthers used a Sam Villa Signature Series 2” Thermal Styling Brush and a Sam Villa Light Professional Ionic Blow Dryer to add bend and direct fringe toward the side.  It frames the cheek and jawbone nicely to accentuate the cut!
