If there were one word to sum up 2020 so far, it would have to be “bold.” From fashion to beauty, people are gravitating towards daring, statement-making looks that show off their unique style and individuality.

In the world of beauty, we’re seeing the bold trend take shape in the form of bright, graphic makeup and colorful, impossibly creative nail art. Color is back in a big way—not just when it comes to makeup and nails, but when it comes to the hottest hair trends as well. While fashion shades and #rainbowhair have been around for years, even decades, the new way to rock bold hair color is all about creative placement. And, this year the hottest hair color trend is: Gemini Haircolor!

Take, for example, Billie Eilish’s two-tone look at this year’s Grammys and Oscars. Eclipsed only by her five Grammy wins, including her record-tying sweep of the top four categories, Eilish’s hair color made a statement of its own. The 18-year-old singer/songwriter rocked lime-green roots and jet-black ends for an overall effect that was both edgy and fresh. Paired with long, green and black nails inspired by her Gucci outfit and highlighted by fingerless gloves, the look was cool-girl perfection.

And, back in October, singer/songwriter Dua Lipa debuted a somewhat tamer—but nevertheless bold—version of the two-tone look, revealing a dark brunette layer beneath golden blonde strands. She showcased the look at the Grammys, wearing a slicked-back, architectural bun with two face-framing pieces pulled loose to highlight the contrast between the dark-meets-light placement.

FKA Twigs also wore a similar two-tone hair color look while performing alongside Usher during the Prince tribute at this year’s Grammys. The 31-year-old singer/songwriter showed off the look, which consisted of long strands of fiery red hair juxtaposed against dark roots, on Instagram, crediting celebrity stylist Rio Sreedharan for her curls.

Safe to say, two-tone hair color is shaping up to be a full-blown trend for 2020. Read on to learn how you can get the look in the salon!

How to Get the Look:

To recreate this bold, Gemini two-tone trend in the salon, first, you’ll want to discuss placement. If your client wants a more subtle take on the look, like Dua Lipa’s hidden two-tone hair color or FKA Twigs’ rooted style, section hair according to your client’s preferences and then hand-paint or use a combination of hand-painting and foils to create perfectly placed color.

For a more daring look, like Billie Eilish’s neon roots, lift the root and hand-paint color against a contrasting base. Using Eilish’s green-and-black style as an inspiration, the look is nearly endlessly customizable, with a full range of color options, ranging from demure to edgy.

And don’t forget the importance of at-home color care! Recommend that your client use products, like shampoos and conditioners, that are specifically designed to protect her color and extend the lifespan of her look. We like Redken’s Color Extend Care line, which includes shampoos, conditioners, and other products for a wide range of hair colors.
