If you have ever seen a style on Pinterest or Instagram and tried to recreate it, only to fail, there may be one detail you’re missing, which can make all the difference – the size; of your section and the curling iron! “When working with curling irons, does the thickness within a section or the iron barrel determine the curl pattern? BOTH!” says, Sam Villa, co-founder of Sam Villa and Global Artistic Ambassador for Redken 5th Avenue. After learning techniques in relation to size, you’ll also learn “The beauty is, the size of the section can be manipulated to create many different types and sizes of curls, even if you use the same size barrel.”
For the test, Villa used the same length section with a different width and a 1” barrel.
2” thick and 2” long vertical section – use a Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Curling Iron and Wand 1” and flat wrap hair around the wand – push hair up to keep it flat and wrap the base working out to ends. The ends have more wear and tear, so they will curl faster than the base will. Starting with the base allows more time for it to heat up. Count to 10, then release hair and clip up so it cools.
1” thick and 2” long vertical section - use a Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Curling Iron and Wand 1” and flat wrap hair around the wand, moving hair to the base of the iron and wrapping all the way to the tip without overlapping hair to evenly distribution of heat. Count to 10, then release hair and clip up so it cools.
RESULT: The thicker section created a larger curl with more space between the curves and less action, while the smaller section yielded a springy smaller curl with less space between curves.
You may be left asking: what happens if I only have one size barrel? To that Sam Villa says, “my friends, if you find yourself on set or behind the chair with only a 1” size barrel, varying the thickness of your section will allow you to still create many different size curls.”
