The Kentucky Derby is known for its horses and its hats! This year, a few talented artists are making it known for the hair as well! Keep reading for the ultimate dose of Derby hair inspiration and a peek as Redken Hair Artist Matthew Tyldesley takes us behind the scenes.

"Hat Hair & Horses" first annual hair show took place at the Kentucky Derby Museums at the historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.  Hosted by State Beauty Supply of Louisville as a vision by owners Jennifer & Michael Hagan to bring together a Derby-inspired hair show.

What made this show so special, aside from the location, was that fact this was an evening hair show and the first of its kind. Hosting over 225 hairstylists from the region and bringing together four main stage artists from four beloved brands – Michelle Patton from Pureology, Danielle Keasling from Matrix, Erica Mooney from L’Oréal Professional, and Matthew Tyldesley from Redken – and was hosted and emceed by Jeff Deshazer.

The show highlighted several hairstyles for Oaks Day, Derby day & after hours hairstyles on the runway in a dazzling opening hair jam on the main stage. Models wore fascinators and hats custom made by "The Hat Girls".

The event hosted several other brands with live demos and booths showcasing hairstyling, hair color trends and hair products perfect for spring and all things Derby. Attendees came dressed in their best Derby attire complete with hats and were given wine and bourbon tastings from local distilleries with the price of admission.

Fashion trends included spring hues, floral prints, lots of pink and coral ranging from designer to custom made garments. Makeup ranged from sultry, smoky looks to attention-getting makeup in bold lip and eye combos.

Hair was on point with an emphasis on hats. Models rocked styles ranging from finger waves, french rolls, chignons, braids, and ponytails. Fashion hair color was on trend and strategically placed in a few of the model's manes.

All four brands had an amazing showing. I was especially proud of my team that consisted of both Redken Artists and local talent. My hair team included hairstylists, Parnelli Gard, Aundreya Shae Rich & Alex Pelerossi. Matt Goodlett the talented makeup artist and wardrobe/styling by Genna Yussman Greene (she not only had time to style and dress the models, but she was also the official event photographer). My beautiful models included Katya Estes, Katie Leigh Tarr & Lucy Duane with Heyman Talent Agency and Redken brand gowns my Jeremie Cote.

It was such a successful event and we are looking forward to watching this show grow! It had a timeless feel, with a magical location and a lot of love. What an amazing experience that we are hoping will become a Derby tradition.
