Despite a few technical difficulties during artists’ performance and the infamous lemon thrown at Ariana Grande, Coachella 2019 didn’t disappoint, especially in the hair department. From funky braids to seashell embellishments, the event provided plenty of inspiration for the season ahead. But fair warning, not all festival trends are meant to be worn outside of the desert. The key to nailing the concert-casual vibe without looking like a lost festival attendee? Sporting toned-down, yet on-trend recreations of your favorite looks. Here, real ways to rock the top festival styles in your everyday life.

Trend # 1: Barrettes

Yes, hair accessories may have made their epic return during Fashion Week, but Coachella marks the first time that many A-listers have full-on embraced the throwback trend, sporting youthful pinned-back styles. Our festival favorite? Model Elsa Hosk’s "Romee & Michelle’s High School Reunion”-inspired ‘do, complete with bouncy round-brush curls and a dainty rhinestone hair pin. For a practical take on the retro look, opt for a statement barrette and a deep side part. Or, create a cool design with a few colored bobby pins.

Trend # 2: High Ponytails and braids

Perhaps it was in honor of Ariana Grande serving as the show’s headliner, but super-high ponytails and braids commanded attention amongst festival attendees. For those looking for a more tamed take on the look, follow singer Normani’s lead and throw your natural curls into a sleek high pony. Or, for a more funky, futuristic look, test drives a high chunky braid a la Culpo.

Trend #3: Boho Braids

Funky braids may be a mainstay at Coachella, but not all braids can easily translate to real life. (Wearing pipe braids to the office? Not recommended!) However, the effortless boho braids spotted on celebs such as Shay Mitchell and Selena Gomez are practical for almost every occasion. The key to the look is lots of texture, with a few tiny braids weaved throughout your head. To give your strands that lived-in look, create a handful of small braids on wet hair and allow hair to air-dry. In the morning, release most of the braids (leaving a few intact), use your fingers to gently comb through the hair, then finish with a texturizing spray.

Trend #4: Natural Touch

Kylie Jenner stunned fans at Kayne West’s “Sunday Service” as she sported a mile-long braid adorned with seashells.  Similarly, fans were just as shocked to see a swarm of butterflies in actress Victoria Justice’s dark chocolate locks. And while the embellished looks are a little too over the top for casual wear, we think hair accessories inspired by natural elements (i.e. a flower headband, a cute butterfly barrette, a seashell) can add a funky, boho vibe to any look.
