Let’s face it: If you’re on the hunt for some hair inspiration, Instagram is the number one place to look. From gorgeous beach waves to effortless up-do's, no other platform provides you with such an endless selection of up-to-the-minute trends straight from the chairs of top A-list stylists (except Bangstyle, of course!). One thing all of your favourite styles have in common? Tons of texture! Adding grit, bounce and dimension can instantly transform any cut into a cool, modern style befitting of the ‘Gram. The good news? You don’t need a celeb stylist to have drool-worthy strands. Check out our top five tips for creating texture in a snap.

Tip #1: Start with a layered cut

If you’re looking to amp up texture, ask your stylist to add layers to your hair. One tip to keep in mind? Size matters! Shorter, choppy layers means messy texture and movement, while longer layers add subtle texture without sacrificing length.

Tip #2: Curl in alternating directions

Another easy way to add body and movement? Curl your hair in alternating directions. Start by curling the front of your hair away from your face, then switch directions as you work your way around your head. Also, pay attention to your curling technique. Always start your curls around the mid-lengths of your hair, rather than the root, to create an effortless bend in the hair instead of a structured curl.

Tip #3: Leave the ends out

Another tip when curling? Avoid touching the iron to the ends of your hair. Instead, allow the ends to remain straight. This will give your hair more of a modern finish. When you’re done curling, allow the hair to cool, then apply a tiny bit of product to the ends to add dimension and separation if desired. (See Tip #5)

Tip #4: Run a flat iron over your braid

Want a cool trick for creating texture? Pull your hair into a braid (or two or three), then run your flat iron along the braid. The heat from the flat iron will seal in the texture from the braid and give your strands an edgy finish that will last all day.

Tip #5: Apply KEVIN.MURPHY TOUCHABLE Texture Finishing Spray

If you’re craving major texture, then this finishing spray is an absolute must. A texture spray/spray wax hybrid, this innovative formula is essentially texture in a bottle. Ideal for creating effortless, “undone” styles, this lightweight finishing spray adds separation and hold. What’s more, unlike traditional spray waxes, it leaves hair touchable and soft, with just enough grit to create a “lived-in” look. To use, dry the hair, then apply the spray to your mid-lengths and ends. Use your fingers to gently “rough up” your hair, scrunching the ends or rubbing the ends together to add separation, dimension, and movement. (Bonus: You can even use this finishing spray on your guy if he wants to add texture and hold to his style!)
