When it comes to hair color, most of the focus naturally goes to the shade, the coverage and the finished result. But what’s inside the formula is just as important. The ingredients influence how the color behaves, while what is already present in the hair can impact the outcome.
Permanent color without ammonia has to work a little differently. It isn’t simply a matter of removing one ingredient. The formula relies on a different alkalizer, which changes what happens inside the hair as the color develops.
As the No. 1 Salon Color Brand in the World¹, Wella Professionals spent 15 years researching these interactions while developing Pure Perfection — a permanent, no-ammonia cream color. The result is a formula with built-in Supercharged Metal Purifier technology, engineered to capture copper and iron simultaneously and help support reliable color performance while caring for the integrity of the hair.
What Happens Inside the Hair During Permanent Color Applications?
Permanent hair color works inside the hair rather than simply coating the surface. To begin the process, an alkalizer raises the pH and gently lifts the cuticle, so that small, colorless dye precursors can enter the cortex.
Once the color is mixed with developer, those dye precursors react with one another and transform into larger color molecules. These molecules become too big to move back out of the hair shaft, which is what creates a permanent color result.
Ammonia and MEA are the two main alkalizers used in oxidative hair color. Both make the permanent color process possible, but they behave differently within the formula and the hair.
Why Do Metals Matter During Hair Color Applications?
Even when hair looks and feels healthy, metals such as copper and iron can already be present within the strands. You won’t necessarily know they’re there, but once the color process begins, they can become reactive and interfere with how the color develops, causing shifts in depth or tone and creating additional stress on the hair.
With no-ammonia permanent color, there is another detail to consider. The MEA used in place of ammonia can create an environment where both copper and iron become highly reactive, which is why no-ammonia formulas need to account for both.
How Supercharged Metal Purifier Works
Pure Perfection was designed with Supercharged Metal Purifier to capture copper and iron at the same time as the color develops. Keeping both of these metals under control helps the formula develop more predictably. The result is pure, true-to-tone permanent color from a no-ammonia formula that is also clinically proven to reduce signs of damage.²
Built Into the Formula
Wella Professionals Pure Perfection with Supercharged Metal Purifier doesn’t add another step to the color service, the technology is already built in. Pure Perfection does not require a dedicated developer. It can be mixed 1:1 with any Welloxon Perfect Developer. Its rich cream texture delivers controlled application and precise placement, while a blend of surfactants helps the color spread evenly and rinse cleanly from the hair.
How Pure Perfection Creates Pure Tones
Every Pure Perfection shade was developed from a carefully selected combination of dyes. For example: Reds are designed to read as pure red rather than leaning orange or blue, while gold remains a clear gold without becoming overly yellow or orange. The neutral shades have a balanced beige undertone that isn’t brown-heavy or violet-heavy. Which is exactly what gives Pure Perfection its pure, dimensional and reflective finish.
With 30 intermixable shades and up to 100% grey coverage, the Pure Perfection makes its own place within the existing permanent color portfolio.
- Koleston Perfect has a brown base for richer, more opaque results.
- Illumina Color has a violet base for sheer, luminous color.
- Pure Perfection sits between them with a neutral base designed for clear, predictable tones and natural dimension.
What to Know Before Your First Pure Perfection Service
Pure Perfection has a familiar mixing and application process. Mix it 1:1 with Welloxon Perfect Developer, apply to dry hair and develop for 30–40 minutes without heat or 15–25 minutes with heat. Then emulsify, rinse and shampoo before finishing with Wella Professionals ULTIMATE COLOR regimen for post-color care.
Before using the range it’s good to note that many of the shades can look very dark while they are developing. But, trust in the process and allow the formula to complete its full development time rather than rinsing early.
