Sustainability and climate-change we’re almost synonymous with fringe and attainability on the runway as designers at Paris Fashion Week presented looks that supported the woman and the world for AW 20/21. While presentability has become a trend again, so has the awareness surrounding our carbon footprints - from manufacturing to consuming. Designs were thoughtful, wearable, and presented the modern woman options to elevate their style while remaining comfortable. We didn't see trends or the feeling that some designs are "in" while others are "out". Instead, there was a revival of some of sorts, showcasing pieces that will highlight the season ahead. Keep reading to see some of our favorite looks from the top shows!

DIOR

There were all the telling signs of Maria Grazia Chiuri, literally - fabulous designs, feminist forward messaging with signs that read “Patriarchy = Climate Emergency," "When women strike the world stops," and “Consent”, and this year, a more blatant stage set for the woman wearing the clothes rather than the one designing them. Grazia Chiuri’s voice, and therefore vision, were developed in the 1970’s when a similar focus on empowerment were just beginning. A sentiment that is often echoed throughout her designs, this season her message was simple: real clothes for real women to wear. Fringe and mixtures of plaid throughout, the 70s were alive in the best way possible. When it came to the hair, a mixture of textures walked the runway, some affixed with patterned scarves others free to be unique.

The models are wearing Dior scarves in their hair at the show this season. I love this style – it gives me 60s vibes and also Axl Rose, biker chick-type vibes. It adds a lot of personality to the style. It’s an accessory we have done two different ways for the show. I’ve complemented the scarves with soft bends in the hair. When you wear an accessory, you don’t have to change the rest of your style up too much since that becomes the statement look. My key product at this show is Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame to tame any frizz, moisturize hair, and to heat protect strands.” - Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.

CHLOE

The runway at Chloe echoed the wearability factor present throughout the city. With references to the 60s and 70s, the clothes have a feel-good mentality that mixed reality with desirability. Center parts were apparent from laid-back waves to slick nape knots with an effortless finish.

“There are a few looks this season at Chloe’s FW20 show. For the first look, which is a spritzed version of hair left down, I am using layers and layers of Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray to achieve this look, so it’s natural but there’s some form to it. The second look is a center-parted, soft knot, and there are also some models where their hair is left naturally. Layering the hairspray keeps your head shape strong so you keep a strong, sculptural appearance to the hair. There are many variations of the Chloe girl, which is a very Chloe esthetic – I asked the models how they like their hair, and went off that. There’s a slight influence of the 70s, which is very Chloe as well.” - Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.

LOEWE

Needless to say, we’re all swooning over this decision while also craving a new Loewe jacket for fall. To accompany the out-of-the-box tailoring, Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau opts for sleek hair and suggestive deep side parts.

“There was a masculine, simple vibe at the FW20 Loewe show this season. I prepped the hair with Redken Extreme Play Safe to heat protect the hair during the blow-dry and to create some smoothness. I then deeply side-parted the hair and went in with a little bit of Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame to contain any frizz, then used Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray to secure the look.” - Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.

SACAI

Military is back at Sacai AW20 as deconstructed designs take on a mixture of everything from pleated skirts to tuxedos, trompe l’oeil dresses, and bold prints. To accompany their futuristic patterns, Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau opts for a futuristic feel all his own.

“This hair this season at Sacai was very futuristic. I prepped the hair with the NEW! Redken Extreme Length Shampoo With Biotin and Conditioner to strengthen lengths and ends, then blow-dried the hair away from the face with Redken Extreme Play Safe. It’s an ultramodern twist on a ponytail.” - Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.

AKRIS

Fashion takes on purpose at Albert Kriemler’s AW20 show. This is always his sentiment when designing for his familial house. While the detailed patterns and textures remain, bespoke the tailoring is made to put whoever is wearing the garments at ease. Newsboy caps of all finishes accompanied each look down the runway, while hair was pulled back into a low ponytail with prominently placed sideburns.

“The look this season at Akris was a low ponytail with exaggerated sideburns, which I created with some razored extensions. Every model at the show also wore a hat, which gave the end look a boyish feel. My key product was Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray for its high hold without the crunch. I love this twist on a hair accessory, which gives a polished, masculine vibe to the overall look.” - Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Upcycling was apparent as a shift in the industry calls for sustainable production and Sarah Burton is leading the way. The sounds of birdsong of children’s voices opened the show of expert tailoring, fitted pantsuits and a pop of punk with red streaks everywhere from accent sleeves to models’ hair. This time around, the team grabbing inspiration from Wales - the spirit of their artisans and from the historical folklore. Inspiring the modern woman to be fierce this season, she’s giving them the uniform to conquer the day (or night) in.

“The hair this season at Alexander McQueen was a wrapped look with pops of bright, custom-dyed and glossed red hair extensions that were heavily lacquered with Redken Forceful 23 Hairspray. The wrapped hair with the vibrant red color gives a sophisticated, dangerous, and quite couture vibe to the look. It’s very McQueen. The red color was chosen because it complements all of the clothes. There’s a sexiness to the look that really reflects the McQueen esthetic.” - Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.

GET THE LOOK – THE COLOR:

“Guido wanted a super bright, super intense red for the McQueen show. We collaborated on this end result, which is very McQueen. This red really needed to stand out when wrapped tight around the head in the style that Guido has created, so my challenge was to create a red color that would give a strong impact in small amounts. When creating a very intense red, it's similar to painting a nail. You have to layer colors over a base coat to get your desired effect.  If you try to paint on a red directly, it can go too orange or a bit too yellow, so to get a really really intense red, it’s about layering one colour on top of another. My key products are Redken’s City Beats range to get the vivid color, and Redken Shades EQ Gloss 000 Crystal Clear for a high-shine reflect.” – Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood.

  1. Mix .5 oz. Redken City Beats Big Apple Red and 1 oz. Redken City Beats West Village Sunset and apply to clean, towel dried hair; process for 30 minutes.

  3. For extra shine, apply a clear gloss using 2 oz. Redken Shades EQ Gloss 000 Crystal Clear and 2 oz. Redken Shades EQ Processing Solution; process for 20 minutes.

MIU MIU

While we always see Miuccia Prada’s expert design instincts through Prada, Miu Miu continues to be a label expressive of her heart. As Prada lives out its 90s heydays and sparks the community to double down on its sourcing of vintage apparel, Miu Miu is reviving a post-war era of glamour amidst the need to get down to business. The hair has a comfortable homemade feel that complements the need to be resourceful. It’s a new world of reinvention and reiterations that has the fashion community begging to consciously rethink their purchases.

“The hair at Miu Miu this season was based on the 40s, but with a twist on the 70s. I like to think of it as how a girl might do her hair in a 40s style during the 70s. It’s a glam, tough girl who is very Miu Miu, and who is always a bit rebellious. I left the lengths loose and a touch messy, which also reminds me of how a girl might do her hair at home – with more of a focus on the front. My key products were Redken Guts 10, the NEW! Redken Deep Clean Dry Shampoo for a touch of volume at the root, and Redken Triple Dry 15 Dry Texturizing Spray for an effortless airiness to the models’ lengths and ends. - Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau.
