While low-maintenance looks and lived-in color are here to stay, one of the most engaging trends to emerge this year is all about being bold. This movement is the opposite of the much-loved Twilighting trend. Twilight hair color is all about keeping things low-key, while the latest movements are all about upping the ante. Not to be confused with the “chunky” highlights of the 90s and 00s, these bold styles combine strategic placement and high-contrast color for a look that’s as edgy as it is fresh.

Keep reading for more bold highlight inspiration, plus how you can recreate the look and make it your own!

For a 90s-throwback feel that’s still distinctly modern, we love graphic, face-framing highlights, like this look created by Los Angeles-based stylist Jessica Gonzalez. To get the look, start with a base that’s darker than the face-frame you want to achieve. If your client is a natural brunette or dark blonde, move on to the next step; otherwise, create a brunette base to ensure contrast. Next, section a one- to two-inch section of hair on either side of the face. Lift these sections to a level 8 to 10, depending on the amount of contrast your client wants. Customize the look by only lifting a section of hair on one side of the face or by adding bold, fashion-forward color.

To help ensure the look lasts, use at-home color care products specifically designed to protect your color. Try Redken’s Color Extend Brownlights Shampoo and Conditioner to nix brass and keep your base looking its best.

The Two-Tone

As seen at this year’s Grammy Awards, two-tone hair color is having a moment. Celebs like Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, and FKA Twigs showcased bold, two-tone styles consisting of bright colors and fresh placement.

For a slightly less edgy—but still attention-grabbing—take on the look, we love Charlize Theron’s tonal bold-lights, created by celebrity stylist Adir Abergel back in October. The look is daring, yet wearable, making it the perfect everyday way to showcase your individuality.

Another way to rock the bold-lights trend is to swap out typical blonde highlights for something a little more dramatic. Go for bold, almost-natural pops of color, like this season’s trendy terracotta, or opt for something truly daring, like vibrant red, silvery blue, or neon green highlights. It’s all about standing out and celebrating your unique individuality.

And, to help the look last and prevent fading, use an at-home color treatment, like KEVIN.MURPHY’s ANGEL.WASH and ANGEL.RINSE to protect the vibrancy of your color and allow you to extend time between salon visits.
