Originally a style donned by women, the pompadour shows off height and volume on top of the head. In more modern times the Pompadour became a classic look indicative of the 1950s rockabilly vibe and icons like Elvis and James Dean.

This cut works best on hair of Medium density and length; tighter on the sides and longer on top, this cut accentuates the jawline and elongates the facial structure, giving the perfect amount of juxtaposition.  Today this look is still a classic, worn on such icons as Justin Timberlake, David Beckham, Bruno Mars, and Conan O’Brien. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to achieve and style this classic modern Pompadour.

BEFORE:                                                                PRODUCTS USED:

STEP 1: Create a HORSESHOE PART

Start by separating the top from the bottom with a high horseshoe parting at the top of the recession.

STEP 2A. ESTABLISH THE BASIC HEADSHAPE

Using clipper-over-comb cutting action in vertical panels with
a large clipper comb and a #1 blade. Create a square or slightly graduated result.

STEP 2B: PIVOT

At the center back, pivot the comb from a slightly graduated shape under the occipital to a square shape above the occipital.

STEP 3A. TRANSITION

Prepare for The Transition, by creating a t-parting at the center of the top of the head.

STEP 3B. DISCONNECTION

Use horizontal sections for moderate length and weight at the transition and top of the head. Connect to the guide under the horseshoe parting at the back of the ear. At the front, disconnect to create length by elevating straight out from the head.

STEP 3C: DIVIDE THE CROWN

Divide the crown area into 3 sections. Within these sections, create horizontal sub-sections. Fully connect to your guides, while keeping the tension low but controlled.

STEP 4. THE TOP

Using side-to-side sections across the top of the head, connect by cutting off the corner at the center of the head. Cut long by cutting only at the center top, and over direct to the previous for added length at the front hairline.

STEP 5A. DETAIL

Using a large clipper comb and a #1 blade, blend from scalp-covered interior to a perfect tailored fit with no length at the hairline. Cut-over-comb and use fanning to set in the final shape.

STEP 5B. SIDEBURNS

Refine the area near the ear and at the sideburn with a #000 blade.

STEP 5C. ELEVATE

With a razor, slide-cut the hair in isolated areas in the location of support, from 1 to 3 inches off of the scalp. The razor should be tilted slightly beyond parallel to hair. Work against the natural fall to fight gravity.  *TIP: Cut only to elevate—not to separate.

FINISHING:

STEP 1: PREPARE

For a polished, high-hold finish with memory, use a high dosage of American Crew Firm Hold Gel as the base product on hair with no to low water saturation.

STEP 2A: ESTABLISH THE DESIGN

Begin shaping and elevating the style with your hands as you rough-dry the hair.

STEP 2B:

Use the high tension from a boar bristle brush to lift hair up at the front hairline and then bend back.

STEP 3: ASSESS AND FINISH

As you complete the styling applications, assess to ensure that the silhouette is solid.
To boost shine, apply a low dosage of American Crew Pomade over the surface and use a paddle brush to lift the front and smooth sides.
