Master Stylist, 3-time NAHA winner, and Creative Director at Salon Gregories in Newport Beach, CA, Dusty Simington has done it again this year with his fabulous collection for Master Hairstylist of the Year. With expert lines, exceptional styling, and absolutely stunning color, his pieces are a work of art from all angles. Keep reading to learn more about his stellar collection and get to know the artist behind this moving work.

What was the inspiration behind your collection?

The need for exceptional education!  I feel the industry has strayed away from its technical roots.  I miss the true artistry of classic shapes and strong lines.  We need to drive a steam roller over all the curling irons in the world and get back to cutting and mastering our craft.

What do you love most about this industry?

The thing I love most about this industry is that it is constantly changing.  Just like fashion, hair is a beautiful way to express ourselves.  We have the greatest job in the world!  In a matter of a couple hours we can completely change someone’s perception of themselves and help them feel amazing.  That’s pretty cool!

What did you learn about yourself through creating the collection?

Each collection presents a new opportunity to stretch our creative vision and technical skills.  Something that I feel when I see the results back from the photographer is exhilaration and the excitement to begin planning the next collection.

What was your biggest focus with each style?

It all begins with a vision. From a vision, we birth a creative strategy, visualized on mood boards.  Our models are individually selected based on the mood boards, the texture of hair, facial features for the desired shape and their ability to pull off the “look.”  I have worked with many talented photographers over the years.  Andrea, our photographer, was perfect for this project.  Her expert eye and input was vital to the entire process.

What products/tools did you utilize?

My scissors are an extension of my arm.  I also developed my Slicers, which are the most amazing Finishing tool a stylist can buy.  The blades were reversed forward so they slide seamlessly through the hair for even and balanced weight removal and detail work. My team and I will demonstrate the Slicers during the classes at the ISSE2019 show.  The giveaway for attendees that fill out the cards at the class and drop them in the box, is a pair of my Slicers!   It’s a $700 value!  The second most important step to perfecting my cut is mastering the blow out.  Detail work is vital to balancing the desired shape. I do not gravitate towards one product line.  I am currently working with my chemist formulating my own product line to be released in 2019!

What other forms of art inspire you?

I strive for perfection, clean lines, and balanced symmetry. I am drawn to the same qualities found all around us in our everyday life. Whether it be through architecture, museums, or in nature. I love to see beautiful haircuts executed by fellow stylists.

How much prep time went into each piece?

I am a hair-nerd and keep journals on my nightstand with concepts, inspiration photos, notes, and scribble of different approaches to new cuts.  I continuously conceptualize new looks and glean inspiration from resources around me.  At times, I allow for the idea to develop even while we are creating the shapes on set.

What was your favorite part about the shoot?

I am so energized while working with my team.  There is tremendous energy in the air when these incredible artists come together and pour into these projects.

How did you select your team? Have you worked with them before?

I have worked with my team for decades. Their commitment, impeccable work ethic, desire to learn incessantly and professionalism continue to blow me away and make me proud.  Passion, above all else, is the foundation of my team.

Where will we find you in Long Beach?!

I will be teaching 5 sessions, all three days at the ISSE 2019 Long Beach Hair Show at the Long Beach Convention Center January 26-28th.  I will be at the 30th Anniversary NAHA Show January 26, 2019, looking for the Master Stylist of the Year win!  Join me and my Advanced Education Team for a look at this year’s 45 Degrees, Texture, and 2019 Collections. We will demonstrate cuts from each collection, including a technical approach to curly hair, versatile and elevated shapes, and we will reveal the anticipated 2019 Collection!

What are you looking forward to most about NAHA 2019!
