In a recent training Daniel was doing with live models, he saw a young stylist who was cutting hair. Thinking he had amazing potential, he looked at the hair he was doing and noticed that the ends were really texturized, almost like split ends. He had the shape, but the scissors were completely destroying the ends. Watch more of the story below:

I looked at the hair and I looked at him and was like, “Let me see your scissors.” He explained how he’d been out of school for four years and was using his beauty school scissors. I reacted with, “These things are so dull! You cannot be cutting hair like that.”

There are big lessons here. He had been doing hair for four years and had his best client come in, then did the haircut with these dull scissors. I felt bad, so I said, “Stick around because at the end of class I just want to clean up those ends.” After I did the haircut, I asked her, “What do you think?” She said, “I liked it like it was before.”

I was kind of shocked from that response, but it’s understandable because she had been getting her hair cut for four years with dull scissors, so she didn’t know what the difference was.

I asked him, “Why are you still cutting with your scissors?” He said, “When I go to a beauty show, there are more deals going on where I can buy and come back with a big shopping bag as opposed to paying $600 to $700 for a pair of scissors and only walk out of that show with one item.

I said, “It makes sense. It took me almost 10 years to buy a $900 pair of scissors.” I looked at him and I said, “You have your work cut out, because I am going to give you a good pair of scissors!”

It’s so important for stylists to have quality scissors when you are doing clientele because you get sharper lines, softness, and texture with ease. You can do just about anything with good scissors. What we’re giving to the stylist now is an amazing quality pair of scissors under $300 dollars. That’s just unheard of.
