Whether you are looking for some sunny strands, a pop of color or an all-over lighter look one thing is for sure – highlights are in your future. Highlights can brighten your overall complexion and give new life to your standard locks but what exactly does highlighting entail and how can we make sure we get that #hairgoals look?

The Process

Highlighting is the process of selecting specific strands of hair and making them lighter than the rest of the hair. Sounds simple, right? Actually highlighting is your hairdresser’s chance to shine as it combines their knowledge of science, art, math, and fashion. Depending on how light you want to go, your desired look, and your hair history the route your hairstylist takes could vary significantly. From bleach to high lift, foils to balayage, and toners to shadow roots - the options (and terms) are endless. Let your hairdresser navigate the route but make sure to suggest destinations you will be happy with. One thing is for certain with color transitions: #slowandsteady always wins the race.

Setting the Expectation

At the beginning of every consultation be prepared to share your complete hair history (one year of history per 6 inches of hair) and your hair goals. Before your appointment, find images of people with a similar skin tone, hair type and eye color – this will give you a good idea of how the color will look on you. Be sure to remember that while images from the back are gorgeous, it doesn't really show the ‘full picture’. Let your stylist know exactly what you love about your goal images and what you do not love. Sometimes you might like the dimension but not the tone, or visa versa! Before beginning, don’t forget to discuss maintenance and pricing, and determine what is realistic for you in terms of upkeep, because at-home maintenance is just as crucial as the salon service itself.

Doing Your Part Before and After Your service

Before

We don’t all have virgin hair but there are a few things we can do to prep our canvas for our next (or first) highlight service. Prior to your highlighting appointment, work in regular conditioning treatments into your home-care, alternating between a protein-based and moisturizing conditioner. Additionally, Avoid excessive heat and be ready for a trim to ensure your goal hair looks and feels its healthiest.

After

Ask your hairstylist about maintenance options and what will be best for your hair and your pocketbook. Swap your shampoo for dry shampoo a few times a week to stretch out your washing routine, giving your hair a chance to breathe and extend the life of your gloss. At each highlighting appointment, be prepared for a trim in order to maintain your hair health. And, as always, consult with your hairstylist about what is best for your hair and color goals at each appointment to ensure the longevity of your color.
