We are thrilled to partner once again with the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) to promote all of the talented artists who are finalists for the 2018 NAHAs (North American Hairstyling Awards), the most prestigious hair and beauty award in the country. In this feature, get to know more about this year's Hairstylist of the Year Finalist – Piero Pirri.

Not only does Piero Pirri make his own wine and enjoy having wine and dark chocolate…(hi, can we be best friends?) he creates absolutely stunning hair art as well. In his collection for the Texture category for NAHA this year he utilized steel wool to add form to his pieces. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance period, his use of color, makeup direction and styling bring this world to life in a new and truly modern light. Get to know more about this magical man and the beautiful art he creates.


What was the inspiration behind the collection?

I was inspired by various artworks created in the Italian Renaissance period. I wanted to add my modern twist on to classical pieces of artwork, and ultimately develop a unique hair visual.

How did you create these looks?

I started to create texture with natural hair and proceeded to add a steel wool to create form.

If you could describe your collection in one word, what would it be?

One word to describe my collection would be Bold.

As texture has become more mainstream, how has it changed the way you express it?

Originally, different textures were achieved through simple techniques such as applying a perm. Currently, texture can be created in a multitude of ways. Products can be utilized, and other materials can be incorporated in the work as well.

What was your biggest challenge in creating the collection?

The greatest challenge I found was to work with natural hair in order to create texture. Additionally, I incorporated a steel wool element to accentuate the hair’s natural state.

How did social media influence your art?

Social media influenced my collection by inspiring me. I follow other incredible hairdressers around the world, and their ideas impacted my work positively. Their contributions to social media platforms sparked my creativity.

What is the next big trend in texture?

The next big trend in texture is utilizing multiple media in the work. In other words, incorporating various materials in the hair will be popular amongst artists in the hair industry.

What do you love about texture?

What I love about texture is the creativity and freedom that it allows me to express. With texture in the hair, it brings the collection to a different level of uniqueness. As an artist, I enjoy creating abstract works. Texture in the hair allows me to achieve all of these factors.

Did you have a hero product or a specific technique that you used?

One of the specific products that I utilized in my collection was the Masterpiece Massive Shine Hairspray by TIGI. I also crimped the hair in different directions to further create texture.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is indulging in some dark chocolate and a quality, homemade, glass of wine. I enjoy making wine; it is my favorite hobby!

Pool, casino, or club?

I would choose the pool over the casino or club. I do like the party scene, but I favor relaxation.

What’s your average Saturday night look like?

My average Saturday night is going out to dinner and enjoying a nice meal with my family.
