All hair types and textures can experience frizz. That’s because frizz is caused by a lack of moisture a.k.a dry hair. While you might notice it more around certain times of the year or in specific climates — it’s a challenge for any type, texture, and length. While lack of moisture is one of the biggest culprits, using the wrong products/tools and not drying or diffusing hair properly can also create frizz. To get a handle on it before the holidays, Evie Rivera, Sam Villa Ambassador and Redken Artist @eviedzine, shares her tips for the issue at hand.
The Top Tips for Reducing Frizzy Hair
- Moisture and Protein: It’s imperative to use the proper shampoo, conditioner and styling products, whether it's protein for highlighted hair or moisture for thick or curly hair. Each product is designed to nourish and protect hair, and together work to encourage the cuticle to lay flat and reduce frizz.
- Tools: Larger curl patterns should not use a brush when drying, yet straighter hair might need it for maximum smoothing. Use an ionic blow dryer like the Sam Villa Professional Light Ionic Blow Dryer, the built-in ceramic/tourmaline ion generation creates incredible shine and reduces static and frizz for ultra-smooth finishes.
- Straight Hair: Use Redken Frizz Dismiss Shampoo and Conditioner and apply styling products designed for this specific hair type. Blow dry 100% for a smooth finish using a Sam Villa Signature Series Paddle Brush, or to create volume use a Signature Series Thermal Round Brush.
- Wavy, Curly and Coily Hair: Use Redken All Soft Mega Curls Shampoo and Conditioner while hair is still wet, apply proper styling products and comb hair with a wide tooth comb or pic, not a brush, it disrupts the cuticle and texture pattern. Diffuse hair with a blow dryer while NOT touching hair. Option: Twist hair around fingers to separate curls or create 2 strand twists by twisting 2 strands around each other and crossing back.
“Reducing frizz is all about understanding hair type and getting the cuticle to lay as flat as possible while cultivating a beautiful shape/finish,” says Rivera.
