In this artist feature, Meleesa Luna explores three different styles that are perfect for any wintertime soirrée! Read on to hear about her inspiration and how she created each look.

Inspiration is what feeds my craft, looking around at my surroundings and what other artists are creating is what feeds my art. In this instance, the inspiration for these images came from the extraordinary looks shown in Paris for Fashion Week F/W 2018. The Haute Couture looks inspired me to create the softened look that could be seen in the coldness of pure winter and the elegance of the dark yet warm winter soirees. The delicate balance between texture and polished classic styles allowed me to create the look and feel, once again balancing all aspects of the fabrics, makeup, hair color, and textures.

Winter Whites

I aimed to evoke romanticism within my winter images – with each model, a diverse vibe. The girl in the white dress was created using a combination of braids and a softer, more undone texture. I used cruelty-free, vegan hair products (in this case Neuma beauty) to create the set and the texture. The twist that comes around the fringe was created with soft lacing, which I wrapped with my fingers and then pinned to add some romantic softness.

I needed to create a different texture, something I haven’t seen before. I wanted it to have a natural curl, but also look styled as well. And, of course, I had to add braids to reinforce the fashion and romance throughout the piece. Therefore I incorporated them to bring out dimension and structure within the softness. Prepping wet hair with New Styling lotion and New Styling Mousse on dry hair, I began to blow dry my model to create an even base. I applied New Styling Extender to the hair before using a 3/4 inch iron to set the hair. Separating the hair in half, lightly lacing and spraying with Neuma Medium Spray, I then twisted and pinned to get my half-up style. Finally, I created braids from the mid-line, using a shine spray to create a highlight on the satin curl to really make the braids POP.

Warm Night Noir

The balance between the fabric and the hair was key for me. I wanted it to be polished yet romantic as if she could step out into the night. This messy bun was created with NeuStyling Pomade. I brought all the hair to the top of the head and secured with a bungee.

I incorporated backcombing to give the hair curiosity and volume on the bun’s base. Once the ponytail came through the base. it was curled with a large iron. The hair was softly backcombed and twisted using the eye to balance and pin the hair in place.

And, voila! I added a final spray and shine (Illumination Mist and Neu Control Firm) to detail and let her dance through the star-filled skies.

The Modern Haute Bun

A twist on the classic bun, I decided to place the deep hues and twists was to bring out the fun and wild at heart feel to this classic style. I used the Noir Bun as the base and added a few twisted hair pieces (in a contrasting color) to define and radiate some fun!
