There’s just something about natural curls that everyone loves. Many try to recreate their uniform style, graceful shape and unprecedented beauty with wands, perms, or blowout tricks, but few come close. As a naturally curly girl, we often times feel as though texture is a bit of a curse – checking the dew point before leaving the house, making sure no one touches them, and getting our shower routine just right. Alongside the proper products, there are a few tricks that can ensure flawless curls without the frizz. Take a peek below to see our top 7 tricks for girls with curls!

Shy away from terry cloth; instead pick up a t-shirt or microfiber towel. Regular towels cause frizz by creating extra friction between the fabric and your hair. By using a smoother surface to dry or blot your curls you cut down on the separation of your curl pattern, allowing your hair to dry smoother.

Always diffuse-dry, never blow haphazardly. That strange attachment you usually throw in the hall closet is actually the best kept secret for drying curly hair or adding extra texture to waves. The air pattern this attachment creates is specifically for curly hair and will dry your tresses without blowing your hair apart.

Make sure hair is fully dry before going outside. When blow drying hair, the reason why we so often see frizz is because the hair is not fully dry. It’s warm inside and you may think that your hair is fully dry, but usually it’s not! If you are diffusing your hair, you can sometimes get away with drying your hair to about 90% and walking out the door, but if you’re going for a straight look, you must make sure each section is fully dry.

Deep conditioner is always a good idea. Whether it is the winter wind or the summer sun, curly hair always needs extra TLC. For finer textured hair Weightless Moisture Masque is a must, for thicker textures Macadamia Professional Ultra Rich Moisture Masque will do the trick. You should leave it on for at least 5 minutes while in the shower, or for extra moisture: Wash hair and pat dry with a towel, apply your masque and run through with a wide toothed comb and cover with a shower cap for at least 20 minutes then rinse.

Protect your hair against the elements. We hate to break it to you, but no one actually has “I woke up like this” hair. To emulate the look, you’re going to need a few products to protect your hair before you leave the house. Macadamia Professional Anti-Humidity Finishing Spray is a staple that any curly girl should have in their style arsenal. Spritz it on before you leave the house and keep a spare in your purse to touch up your style throughout the day, rain or shine.

Style Your Hair While It’s Wet. Maybe you’ve grown your hair out so it’s falling limp, or your curls have a hard time staying put when they air dry, either way it is important to learn how to style your hair while it’s wet so it dries perfectly imperfect. Once out of the shower apply your product from roots to ends and brush through with a wide toothed comb. Allow your hair to fall naturally and use your fingers to carefully wrap sections around your finger and let them drop, giving them a scrunch if they need a little extra help. Work your way from the nape of your neck up to the front, carefully creating your curls without pulling your hair apart.

Touch up with a wand. There’s nothing wrong with touching up your curls with a wand, you can still be part of the naturally curly club. If you sleep on your curls when wet or have a kink in them, using a wand to re-curl your strands is just the pick-me-up they need! This technique can also be used to mix your natural wave with alternating curl patterns to get an undone curled look.
