Check out our exclusive interview with Madison and get the scoop on what fuels her passion for hair artistry!

Tell us a bit about your nominated collection this year. What was the inspiration behind the looks? How did the creative process unfold?
My nominated collection came to life through multiple inspirations, lots of late nights, determination and Red Bull. I was inspired by structure, lines, elements and variations of blues which then became common threads for these three looks.

Were there collections in other categories that you found inspiring or particularly appealing?
The two collections that I was inspired by that were nominated in this years category of “Hair Stylist of the Year” were Allen Ruiz from Jackson Ruiz salon and Matt Swinney’s collection from Evolution Experience Hair Culture.

What is the one tool and/or product you can't live without?
Aveda’s Spray on Shine finishing product is a product I could not live without. It is not only great for everyday use but makes your finished look that much more complete.

Which other areas of hair are you excited to explore? Or elements you want to play with in future collections?
I look forward to exploring more avant-garde looks, color magic, and anything outside the box.

Which non-hair related areas do you constantly find yourself being inspired by?
I am inspired everyday by editorial makeup artists and the amazing things going on in that area of the industry.

How will you celebrate a win your category?
I would love to celebrate a win in this years “Student Hairstylist of the Year” category by attending New York Fashion Week, as traveling is my favorite way to celebrate.

Who influenced you the most in your career?
The entire Aveda Inspire Greatness Team. Nicole Higgins has not only been my mentor and educator in the classroom and on the floor, but she has shown me that there are endless possibilities.  Nicole has taught me to work your hardest while also enjoying the ride. Nicole was nominated as “Student Hairstylist of the Year” 2012, this made me believe it was possible for me. Watching her continue to work with her mentor Brad Van Dyke, this team has taught me how important it is to have a good team that do not just work together but also love each other.

What was the most surprising thing you've discovered about the hair industry?
The most surprising thing for me that I learned quickly about this industry is the extremely high level of articulation and inspiration of so many people.

Do you have a ritual or lucky item you'll be bringing to the awards?
My good luck charm would have to be the fact that this years NAHA awards ceremony will take place on my 20th birthday!

What's your guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure is hot sauce with everything!
