Whenever there is a special event, the first thing that comes to mind is: What am I going to wear? How will I wear my hair? And, What color should I do my nails? If you’re a woman who colors her hair, your first instinct is to book an appointment to ensure fresh color before the big night. This year, at the 2018 SAG Awards, the work of Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham and Redken Ambassador Cassondra Kaeding shined bright on the Red Carpet as their clients, Kristen Bell and Olivia Munn made their way down the carpet and onto the stage. Follow along below as each stylist gives us the tips and tricks for getting a standout color.
Tracey Cunningham was responsible for Kristen Bell’s blonde locks, which she created with highlights and a shadow root with Shades EQ. “I’m all about natural-looking haircolor.” Said Cunningham. “To achieve that, I first start with babylights to keep the highlights super fine and less apparent. As with Kristen’s look, a root shadow will help blend in the highlights with her natural color and also help to minimize the line of demarcation. Avoiding brassiness is all about balancing the warm and cool tones – I love Shades EQ to help me achieve that – and it is just as important that clients help maintain their haircolor at home by using a color-safe shampoo like Redken Color Extend Magnetics or Blonde Idol.”
Step 1 – Highlight Formula:
- All-over foil highlight with Redken Flash Lift and 40 Vol Pro-Oxide developer
Step 2 – Root Shadow
- Gloss Zone 1 with Shades EQ Gloss 1oz 09N + 1 oz 09NB + 2 oz Processing Solution
- Process for 5 minutes, then shampoo and condition with Redken Color Extend Magnetics
When it came to Olivia Munn’s stunning brunette shade, Cassondra Kaeding ensured that she stunned by creating depth with balayage and shine with Shades. “For Olivia, she has a natural rich brunette base, so I enhance that with Shades EQ 6N + Clear from her roots to mid-lengths,” Kaeding said. “Then to add dimension, I’ll balayage in some highlights from her mid-lengths to ends. Her hair lifts beautifully, so I usually don’t have to gloss over the highlights for any additional toning.”
