The talents within hair artist Dusty Rhode, are simply amazing. Lucky for us, Dusty let us pick his brain about Men’s trends, creativity, and his recipe for a great photo shoot! Check out our exclusive interview below to learn more about Dusty, and what fuels his passion for great hair!

What was the inspiration behind your Men’s collection? How did the creative process unfold?
My inspiration for this shoot was to create slightly more progressive shapes then what mainstream men are currently wearing: but believable options for the near future. Most shoot ideas for me begin with a single shape that I would like to create. Then all other ideas seem to snowball off the original until a collection is born.  Sometimes this process takes minutes, other times it can take days or weeks for me to land on designs that I feel are harmonious enough to fit in one collection.

What is your “Recipe” for an amazing shoot?
1 Cup- Good models
3 Tablespoons- Good lighting
2 Teaspoons- Great shapes
4 Pinches-  Technical excellence
1 Gallon- Of hope that the whole thing doesn't fall apart before its finished.

What’s on your photo shoot playlist?
Gramatik, Beats Antique, RJD2, and Pretty Lights!

Which men’s hair trend are you loving right now?
Exaggerated Flat-Tops, and High Fades with full fringe worn forward!

What is the one tool or product you can not live without?
Tool:“Andis BGR+” Detachable blade clipper
Product:“Aveda Control Force” Hairspray

Who are your idols in the hair industry? Have you met any of them?
Of course Vidal Sassoon, but others are Ricardo Dinis, Kurt Kueffner, Gerard Scarpaci.  I also think the folks at the ZGAT Academy have been doing some killer shapes. Being an Aveda Guest Artist I have had the opportunity to work with a few of these people over the years..

Who are your style icons?
I’ve always enjoyed Jean Paul Gaultier.  My personal style couldn't be further from his designs, nevertheless they seem to consistently strike a chord with me.

If you could style anyone’s hair…who would it be and what would you do with their hair?
Ellen- Although it would further accentuate her ears, I would love to give her a tight shadow fade with extreme texture through the top, and an exaggerated full fringe.  “Theoretically“ because of who she is it could be the hottest, most talked about, and most duplicated short haircut for women in years.

Which non-related hair areas do you constantly find yourself inspired by?
By people that are not just passionate, but whole heartedly believe in what they are doing, and do it with a servants heart. (No matter the profession)  Passion alone is a lustful emotion that comes and goes, and a passionate person can still be a prick. It is the people that possess the entire package that inspire me to be better at what I do.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
90’s R&B
