We are thrilled to partner with the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) to promote all of the talented artists who are finalists for the 2016 NAHAs (North American Hairstyling Awards), the most prestigious hair and beauty award in the country. Bangstyle had the honor of interviewing amazing hair artist, and one of this year’s finalists in the “Hairstylist Of The Year” category, Diana Rocha Skrabanek.

Diana Rocha Skrabanek uses color coupled her precision cutting to create beautiful pieces of art. For this amazing collection, she tells us about her inspiration behind the piece, how she was aiming for a “shine line” throughout, and the ways in which she achieved this. Take a peek at this absolutely beautiful collection and learn more about Diana!

What was the inspiration behind your collection?

When I started to create my mood board, the common theme with all of my inspiration images was a shine line. The hair was combed perfectly smooth and captured the shine line created by the lighting. The images with color made the shine line pop and the color radiate. When I found Callum Standen-May’s British Hairdressing Award 2015 winning collection, I was immediately influenced. I knew I wanted to create looks that would feature the hair and highlight the techniques with the perfectly placed photographic lighting.

What techniques did you practice to ensure a successful shoot?

Technique is the foundation of great haircutting. Every chance I have to practice a one-length perimeter, graduation, and layering, I am one step closer to mastering my craft. This collection was all about precision.

What was the method for selecting your team? Had you worked with them before?

I sought out photography and model portfolios through social media to see who and what really inspired me with their work, even if I had not previously worked with them. Also, I am fortunate to work at one of the best salons in the country, and we are always ready to help each other out and collaborate. Ultimately, the team that organically came together helped me create the best collection for my vision.

What do you think is the most exciting technique in the world of hair right now?

I am currently inspired by two opposites of the spectrum: barbering, and hair extensions and hairpieces. Barbering is all about the details, and perfecting it can only come from endless practice. Nonetheless, there is an infinite amount of possibilities when you start adding more and more hair to your canvas. It is all hair art to me, and I just want to create.

Is there a category that you would love to compete in, in the future?

I created this collection with the Contemporary Classic category in mind. I am inspired by great technique and execution. I also love to push the envelope and would like to create a collection for the Avant Garde category in the future. When collaborating on the Ruiz Salon team shoot, I am usually assigned to the Avant Garde team. It is challenging to present and shoot two looks with originality, so producing five solid looks would be a test I would love to tackle.

What other nominated collections inspired you?

I admit, I love to continuously look through the archives of past NAHA winners and finalists and marvel at their work. In 2013, Allen Ruiz and Geno Chapman both delivered collections that were simple at first glance, but at the same time, very technical. The same is true for the 2014 collections of Michael Haase and Alain Pereque. I have the privilege of working with and learning under Allen Ruiz and I’ll always remember when he said, “You can do whatever you want, just make sure at the end of the day, it’s beautiful.” Word.

What’s the one tool or product you can live without?

As a cutting specialist, I swear by my shears. I work with the KASHO Ceramic "ZR" which I find are incredibly light, sharp, and ergonomic.

What advice can give to the next generation of stylists?

The best advice I can share is, never stop learning. Take every class that piques your interest and assist whenever possible. Most importantly, practice and attempt everything. You never know what you're capable of until you try.

What’s your average Saturday night like?

Honestly, when I get home from a long Saturday shift, it’s naptime! Once I wake up, my husband is ready to spend some time together so we usually go out to dinner or meet up with friends.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Sweets! I am a foodie, and nothing makes me happier than a great dessert. Every time I am in Vegas, I try to find the best desserts in town!

Who is the one person you don’t want to forget to thank on stage?

There are so many people to thank! But it would be a tragedy if I forgot to thank my mentors. Two in particular: Allen Ruiz and Vanessa Whitmarsh. When you watch them work, there is so much to learn. I am grateful for the times I have been able to assist and collaborate with them. I always try to soak in as much knowledge as possible. I would not have learned as much as I have in the last four years without the opportunities afforded to me working alongside such a great team.
