Here’s what Estilo y Forma learned at Matrix Artistic Educator Michael Albor’s “Foundations of Hairdressing” class, a Matrix Program of Passion.

Michael Albor, NAHA Editorial category award-winner and Matrix Artistic Educator, shared his best tips and techniques at his Matrix Program of Passion, “Foundations of Hairdressing.”

1. The height of Matrix StyleLink product packaging determines how far away from the head to apply it.

2. This one’s for stylists: Determine how “wet” a hairspray is by holding your hand away from the mist and then bringing it closer. When your hand starts to get wet from the hairspray, stop. You should spray clients’ hair a little farther away than that to avoid helmet head.

3. When trying to find a product for “body,” you can also look for the word “hold.” These two words are often interchangeable.

4. Whatever you do, don’t open the bobby pin! It will only hold as much as the loop on the end.

5. Give your receptionist a list of do’s and don’ts for updo clients when booking. Guide them on what products to prep their hair with before the appointment.

6. For shorter hair, keep hair closer to the head where the flats are and fuller where the rounds are to create the best updo silhouette.

7. There is no such thing as wash and wear hair. Make sure your clients know this so they aren’t set up for disappointment.

8. Smooth away flyways with the hairspray can. The can is cool, so it helps set the style, too.

9. Make a binder of updo looks that show both the front and back of the updo.

10. For clients that bring in an updo photo of just the back of the head, ask them how they want the front to look.

11. Victoria’s Secret magazines are the best place to look for examples of neutral hair color. The models’ hair is styled in simple beach waves with neutral hair colors to keep the look softer and less risqué. It’s the perfect place to find an example of neutral hair color to show your client.

12. When clients bring in a updo/style/haircut picture, ask them what it is that they like. If it’s a blonde photo, make sure they know that brunette hair won’t have the same dimension—but suggest some highlights to give them some dimension.

13. Use Instagram as a portfolio of your own work to show your clients.
