The North American Hairstyling Awards, NAHA, is produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) will celebrate 25 years in 2014 as the beauty industry’s leading honor. Bangstyle had the pleasure of getting to know the amazingly talented Marylle Koken, one of this year's nominees in the "Men's Hairstylist of the Year" category. Check out our exclusive interview with Marylle to learn a bit more about her collection and what fuels her passion for hair.

Tell us a bit about your nominated collection. What was the creative process like? Inspiration?
As the owner of The Harlot, in Venice CA, I draw a lot of my inspiration from my community. Venice is peppered with some of the most beautiful and handsome individuals. The men in this town have what I could only describe as a "French hobo/boho chic" look. I tried to create a style for each of my models based on the inspiration I drew from my observations of the local Venetians.

Where there collections in other categories that you found inspiring?
I feel as if the competition this year is phenomenal. Everyone really turned up the notch and brought something new to the industry. With that being said, I feel extremely inspired and proud of Michael Hasse, Anthony Cress, Diva Poulos, and Shirley Gordon.

What drew you to Men’s styling?
Men's styling is a real challenge. It's not easy to take something that has been pretty much the same through the ages and make it fresh and new. It's also an extremely technical category. I was drawn to the challenge. I wanted to explore my ability and really test my skills as a stylist.

Who are your idols in the hair industry? Have you met any of them?
I'd have to say that one of my all time favorite hairdressers is Trevor Sorbie. I met him in my teens and was amazed by his performance on stage. He is such an amazing entertainer and I really was impressed how easy it was for him to create the art that he does. Another idol of mine has always been Geri Cusenza. In all honesty, she was the one who gave me the opportunity I have with Sebastian Professional and really believed in my talent.

What’s your favorite aspect of being a stylist?
Being able to come to the salon everyday and do what I love is extremely gratifying. Not only that, but the relationships I build with my clients and fellow hairdressers are beautiful. Each and every one of them mean the world to me and make this path I've chosen all the sweeter.

What's your guilty pleasure?
My sweet tooth is insatiable... I mean it is seriously a problem. If you have ever been in my salon, The Harlot, you'll know what I am talking about, and why every corner has some sort of sweet displayed. I make my salon manager keep the M&M's at the front desk so I don't eat them all day. My love affair with M&Ms could be made into a reality show.

What is your favorite hair texture to style?
I adore hair with a personality. Meaning that they have a very natural texture. That could be anything from afro to slight wave. Any texture is a go as long as it challenges me.

Most humbling moment as an artist?
I would have to say being honored as Mentor Of The Year at NAHA 2013 last year was incredibly humbling. I wasn't even expecting something like that! From the bottom of my heart, I mentor and teach these young talents because I wholeheartedly believe that they are the future of this industry. I have such passion for their success as young artists. Receiving that award was one thing that I will never forget. I could never say thank you enough to the people who made it all possible for me to mentor the wonderful individuals that I do. Thank you Sebastian and Wella Family!!

Do you have a ritual or lucky item you'll be bringing to the awards?
Well, I always start off putting on my most comfortable undergarments! ;b I never drink any kind of caffeine or coffee before the show and I always call my mom.

What non hair related areas do you constantly find yourself being inspired by?
It may be cliché, but fashion is a huge inspiration to me. I can immediately start putting together collections and looks that would work with the clothing presented to me. Some of my most favorite and inspirational designers are Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, and Skingraft. Of course, music is also a huge part of my inspiration, and with the right beat, I can be transported to some of my minds most inspirational places... from there, my hands do my mind's bidding.
