A “celebration of life” the Marc Jacobs SS20 runway was a dream that celebrated individuality and hinted at a return to maximalism. With over 60 bespoke looks created by makeup artist Pat Mcgrath, Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau and Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood followed suit by creating hair that did anything but waver in its shadows. Between the hair and the makeup and the iconic looks that referenced his show 18 years earlier on September 10th 2001, before the whole world changed - this show was bright, loud in the best way possible, everything the audience was hoping for, and the perfect way to close NYFW.

“There’s a cast of characters here at the Marc Jacobs Show. Some from another era, some nods to the 70s, 80s, nods to now… it’s a collection of everything that Marc likes, really. We built the hairstyle, the color, and the makeup with Pat around each of these distinct personalities. There are hats, there is color, there are a lot of looks… there’s a lot of everything, in a way. There’s a bit of irony and humor in some of the looks as well. We’ve taken individualism to an extreme here by having every model walk with a distinct look. For any blow-drys, my key product is Redken’s NEW! Extreme Play Safe leave in to heat protect. Most of the looks involve hairspray as well, and I’ve utilized my new backstage must-have NEW! Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray for high hold without the crunch. The neutral fragrance is perfect for backstage.” – Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau

“I worked with Guido and Marc to create individual colors that portray different personas on both models’ hair and on wigs. I used Redken Flash Lift Bonder Inside,Redken Shades EQ and Redken Color Gels Lacquers to create looks across onyx bowls to split dyes, skater blondes and normcore naturals via light brown and mid-blonde shades. Each look was carefully crafted to deliver a unique persona and caused every model to stand out in their own right to celebrate the beauty of each individual.” – Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood.

Balance was a strong element echoed throughout the Proenza Schouler SS20 show. Taking inspiration from the women who they work with - many of whom had children - the designers wanted to ensure an easily wearability with a high fashion flair. A strong nod to the 80s, with an upcoming collaboration with Birkenstock many of the models toted these shoes down the runway much like how women of New York change into their comfy shoes once they leave the office. At the root of it, women are shown as true forces who embody strength and independence.

“We’re here at the Proenza Schouler show where the hair is a definite nod to the 80s with very dramatic ponytails that are smoothed with the new Sultra Bombshell Volumizing Dryer and sculpted with Redken Hardwear 16 Gel.  A powerful dryer and great stylers are essential to any backstage look.” – Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau

GET THE LOOK:

Step 1: Prep damp hair with Redken Extreme Play Safe for up fortify and strengthen strands with up to 450-degree heat protection, then blow dry smooth using the new Sultra bombshell Volumizing Hair Dryer (launching 10/1) to create a smooth, silky finish.  The dryer emits both infrared and ions to smooth and speed up drying time, while nurturing hair.

Step 2: Run dryer along hair straight back away from the face using the speed of the small yet powerful 1600 Watt Sultra Dryer to create volume.

Step 3: Then, straighten using the Sultra Bombshell Curl, Wave, and Straight Iron to give it a flat texture to easily bind the hair.

Step 4: Apply Redken Hardwear 16 Gel and apply through the front of you hair to create a wet texture, enhancing a very strong head shape, finishing with Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray to give a strong hold with no crunch.

Step 5: Once that front texture is created, the hair is bound into a tight ponytail at the nape of the neck and wrap with leather, leaving about an inch of the ponytail out — so it resembles a horse’s tail on the bottom.

Step 6: Finish by straightening the bottom of the ponytail with the Sultra Bombshell Curl, Wave, and Straight Iron to create a strong, bold finish.

Step 7: Spritz Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray over the whole look for hold.

As if we weren’t in love with big sleeves already, Carolina Herrera just gave us another reason this season. Larger than life prints accompanied billowy sleeves and pops of color while belted waistlines defined the feminine physique. Strands were calm cool and collected, just like the designs as Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau created a slicked back style.

“We’re here at the Carolina Herrera show where the hair has a slight nod to the 80s, as well as a nod to a modern take on Carolina herself who typically pulls her hair back and keeps it quite groomed. The hair is parted in a slight gesture to the side at the top, and volume and texture was added with Redken Guts 10 and then the look was held with Redken’s new high-hold, neutral fragranced hairspray Triple Pure 32. I left the back of the hair natural or slightly enhanced with an iron to keep it modern. There is an elegant sophistication in its simplicity.” – Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau

2.     Create a side part using your fingers.

3.     Apply about a palm-sized amount of Redken Guts 10 to the crown area for volume and hold, heading towards the back of your ear.

Who else is ready for a permanent vacation? Gypsy Sport SS20 spoke to the audience like many of the other shows this year - from the vantage point of vacation wear. A palm tree lined runway and fruity cocktails made up the scene as onlookers rethought the notion of “luxury”. “Individuality is really important to Gypsy Sport, so everyone is getting something a bit different and unique. I was inspired by people on holiday, but in a sort of fantasy world, and mixed 1920’s styles, like finger waves and pin curls, with futuristic 2020 looks.” – Cutler Hair Lead Evanie Frausto
