Can we just take a minute to check in on all of the 2018 New Year’s resolutions? Did yours fall flat within the first week? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! In fact, according to a study, only 8 percent of people actually follow through with their resolutions—until now. This New Year, set yourself up for success with resolutions that you’ll actually want to put into practice. Check out 10 foolproof beauty resolutions that will help you look amazing in 2020.

Resolution #1: Treat your hair like gold

Your strands take a beating on a daily basis. By thinking of your hair as a precious commodity, you’ll be more likely to take good care of it. Think: minimizing heat styling, staying up on your trims, applying deep conditioner weekly, using high-quality shampoos free of harsh sulfates, etc.

Resolution #2: Scale back on dry shampoo

Let’s face it: Dry shampoo is a lifesaver in the mornings, allowing women everywhere to subtly disguise their Day 3 (or Day 4 or 5) hair. But there can be too much of a good thing, especially when it comes to dry shampoo. Using too much can clog the hair follicle, which may hinder growth and dry out your scalp. To keep your strands in optimal health, aim to apply dry shampoo only 1-2 times max in between washes.

Resolution #3: Stop picking at your cuticles

Raggedy cuticles are never cute, no matter how much money you spend on your manicure. Use the New Year as an excuse to kick your cuticle-picking habit to the curb once and for all. When you do feel the urge to pick, soak your hand in warm water for a couple of minutes, then use a stainless steel cuticle pusher to gently push back your cuticles. Your nails will thank you.

Resolution #4: Wash your makeup brushes and beauty sponges often

Women can be so meticulous in their quest for a clean house, yet they fail to recognize the amount of bacteria they’re piling on their face every time they use a dirty makeup brush. Prevent unsightly blemishes by washing your makeup brushes at least once a week. For an easy DIY brush shampoo, mix together two parts dish soap to one part olive oil. Wet the brushes, then gently swirl them around in the mixture until all of the makeup has been removed. Finally, reshape the bristles, then allow the brushes to dry flat on a towel.

Resolution #5: Amp up your go-to hairstyle

Feeling stuck in a hair rut? Try researching new ways to change up your favorite style, whether you rock a “mom bun,” low pony or beach waves on a daily basis. For example, wrap a tiny braid around your bun for a chic finish, change up your part or straighten the ends of your waves for a cool, modern look.

Resolution #6: Give yourself a DIY facial at least once a week

Just because a once-a-month spa trip may not be in your budget doesn’t mean you should neglect your skin. Carve out one night a week to pamper yourself beyond your regular cleanse/moisturize routine. Start with a thorough double cleanse, then steam your face by standing over a bowl of hot water. Exfoliate the skin, then apply a mask to treat any problem areas, and finish with a luxe serum, moisturizer and eye cream.

Resolution #7: Try at least one new hair color

Not one to stray far from your natural shade? Allow yourself to experiment with color in 2019. Add subtle highlights in a fun color or break up a darker base with a sun-kissed balayage. You never know, you may fall in love with a brand new hue!

Resolution #8: Follow a “pretty diet”

While eating healthier or losing weight may be everyone’s resolution in the New Year, it also usually one of the first vows to break. Why not try something a little different? Start incorporating foods that will give you clear and radiant skin, longer nails and healthier, shinier hair. Viewing a healthy lifestyle as a “beauty tool” rather than a strict diet may make it easier for you to follow. Opt for a diet rich in leafy greens, lean proteins, eggs, antioxidant-rich fruits, and vitamin-rich veggies.

Resolution #9: Restock your haircare arsenal

If your bathroom cabinet is looking more clearance aisle than a high-end boutique, it’s officially time for a good cleaning. Toss any expired or near-empty bottles, then reward yourself with an array of fresh products.

Resolution #10: Prioritize self-care

Although it may not sound like a beauty resolution at first, self-care is 100 percent about looking and feeling your best. Treat yourself to a mani/pedi, lengthy massage or a once-a-month blow-out—anything that will give you the chance to relax, unwind and help you conquer all of your goals in 2019!
